On October 19, Tallahassee Mayor John Dailey visited Florida A&M University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute of Public Health to launch the Pharmacy Week proclamation in celebration of local pharmacists and pharmaceutical technicians.

The American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) has declared October 17-23, 2021 National Pharmacy Week to recognize the invaluable services of pharmacists and technicians to patient care in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and other healthcare facilities.

Mayor John Dailey presented the Pharmacy Week proclamation for the city of Tallahassee from October 17-23, 2021 in support of the ASHP initiative to celebrate workers in the local community.

“During the ASHP of Florida A&M University College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Services, Institute of Public Health, Tallahassee’s 17th, you hereby acknowledge October 17-23, 2021 as Pharmacy Week in Tallahassee, Florida,” said Dailey.

The College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute of Public Health is honored to be part of a monumental event promoting the awareness of FAMU’s pharmacy program and providing an opportunity for deeper community engagement.

Gallop Franklin, visiting professor at FAMU College of Pharmacy and Clinical, expressed what the proclamation means for the college.

“It means a lot,” said Franklin. “It means the local city board and the mayor support the pharmacy’s impact on our community and institution, for our learning, for the Florida A&M University College of Pharmacy, the Institute of Public Health, and the influence we have in preparing the future pharmacists in America. “

Pharmacists play an important role in delivering COVID-19 vaccines and as the frontline staff to ensure that patients are maintaining medication and overall health. Dr. Jocelyn Spates, Assistant Dean of Clinical Affairs and Professor, spoke about the benefits of Pharmacy Week to highlight the sizeable work of industrial workers.

“Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians have worked three times taking care of sick patients who have contracted COVID and giving people the Covid vaccine,” Spates said. “It’s just the right moment to pause and acknowledge the wonderful work we are doing.”

The Tallahassee pharmaceutical industry will soon have more valuable student opportunities as large companies set up offices and distribution centers in the area. Franklin provided an insight into how the industry will develop for the local health workforce over the next few years.

“Amazon is coming to Tallahassee and has a lot of pharmaceutical startups,” said Franklin. “So there will be more opportunities for our students to stay on site and connect with their local presence via Amazon.”

The College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Services, Institute of Public Health ended the week of celebration with the Whitekittel Ceremony for the Class of 2023.
