Georgia sweeps from Florida into Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Florida – Despite phenomenal efforts by Junior Zoie Hartman and runner-up Luca Urlando, the eighth-placed University of Georgia swim and dive team fell to Florida at both meetings on Friday morning at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. The Georgia women dropped a close decision of 153-147 while the men were defeated 180-120.

Urlando prevailed with B-average times in the 100 butterflies (45.61), 200 butterflies (1: 42.09) and 200 IM (1: 45.12) and achieved the fastest time in the nation this season in each discipline . He now holds the national lead in four disciplines and joins the 100 backstrokes he scored against South Carolina last Saturday. His fellow student Jake Magahey also took first place in the 500 freestyle with 4: 16.95 and the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 8: 55.24.

Hartman took four wins in the encounter, swept the breaststroke and 200 IM with B-cut times in each race. In the 200th breaststroke, Hartman and senior Danielle Della Torre took the top two spots to encourage a late Georgia comeback. Senior Dakota Luther continued the excellent start of the season with a B-cut sweep of the butterfly events. Hartman and Luther together with the newcomer Eboni McCarty and the second Maxine Parker won the 200 layer relay with a time of 1: 39.72. The Bulldog women also took first place in the final 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3: 18.20.

On other wins in Georgia, Junior Ian Grum led a top-three sweep of the 200 back with a B-cut time of 1: 43.49, followed by teammates Bradley Dunham and Mitchell Norton. In the women’s category, Duné Coetzee (1: 47.52) and Abby McCulloh (4: 45.38) again took first place in the 200 and 500 freestyle.

At the diving fountain, Meghan Wenzel (292.13) and Tally Brown (280.73) both achieved zone qualification results in the 1-meter, while newcomer Timothy Fagan achieved the Bulldogs’ top mark on the 3-meter with 285.68.

Georgia will be staying at the Martin Aquatics Center on her way to Auburn this Friday, November 6th at 12 noon.
