Tallahassee Babe Ruth 14Us stamp their place in the World Series

Tallahassee Babe Ruth 14Us stamp their place in the World Series

JACKSON, TENN. (WTXL) – Tallahassee is fast becoming the epicenter for summer baseball. Three Babe Ruth teams are participating in regional tournaments this week. The 15Us won the title on Friday and as fate would have it, the 14Us took care of business on Saturday evening. A 13-0 victory in the championship game sealed the second regional title for the capital. In Jackson, Tennessee, they faced some pretty tough adversity. But in the end, their fight was simply unbeatable.

“Well, I think these guys took this loss pretty hard. They were determined not to come out of here a loser. No doubt about it, ”said head coach Bruce Williams. “They fought hard and it was an outstanding performance by the entire team. I mean we have 12 players and everyone did an amazing job in this tournament. And I’m really proud of these guys, I really am. “

Tallahassee will be competing in the 2021 Babe Ruth World Series in Ottumwa, Iowa. First game is Saturday, August 14th at 5:30 p.m.

Letters to the editor of Gainesville Sun for August 1, 2021

A commercial place in east Gainesville.

Gainesville isn’t overdeveloped

A letter published on July 18 echoed disappointment that ongoing construction would turn Gainesville into a concrete canyon in just a few years. I respectfully disagree. The canopy of leaves in residential areas has never been thicker than it is today.

Between 1960 and 2010, the US Census Bureau household size in Gainesville decreased from 3.5 people per household to 2.25. The central and eastern parts of the city have become so depopulated that they can no longer support a viable retail or service economy. Gainesville is not overdeveloped, but has receded to an almost semi-rural status on its eastern fringes.

Apartment buildings in the corridors around the university would be less disruptive if they had major setbacks and better exterior design. Colonnades and larger tree fountains should be encouraged. In any case, Gainesville cannot thrive without a vibrant mixed-use area from the university to downtown.

You can’t even see the larger buildings in Innovation Square from University Avenue or 13th Street. Over 70% of the University of Florida’s faculty and staff live outside the city limits, so most of the city’s traffic is generated by commuters rather than inner-city development.

It’s time to abandon the idea that Gainesville was just supposed to be a bigger version of Micanopy or High Springs.

Mike Hoge, Gainesville

Further letters:

Impact on Affordability

In response to the column “Where have all the trailers gone?” – While the author’s permissive use of the word “follower” to describe living conditions is offensive by some, his insights into the growing need for affordable housing and how to achieve it are spot on.

The need for affordable housing in Gainesville has never been greater. Today, the average median list price of a home for sale is $ 254,000. Most young families and service workers just cannot afford to pay that much for a house.

An often overlooked solution is the renovation of older RV parks. This begins with removing barriers that prevent older, outdated homes from being replaced with new prefabricated homes.

A current example of a regulation that missed the target is new height requirements for floodplain areas. The city of Gainesville could have adopted the federal government-recommended height requirements of the Florida Building Code, but instead passed an ordinance raising replacement homes in RV parks higher. This requirement unnecessarily increased the cost of new homes and pushed some of Gainesville’s most price-sensitive families out of the market.

Everyone deserves to live in a safe, decent home. Elected officials must carefully weigh the impact of their decisions on housing affordability.

James R. Ayotte, General Manager, Florida Manufactured Housing Association, Tallahassee

Learning opportunity

I have to disagree with the author regarding a recent letter about children asking for donations while driving. This is not a good example, and it is not to be commended. It’s unsafe too.

When I see young people asking for donations, I am sad that the trainers, parents or counselors missed a great learning opportunity. Fundraising is an opportunity to teach how to set a goal, create a plan, and work towards achieving that goal.

I like to contribute if you want to wash my car or do a cake sale. Just holding out a hand does not mean teaching a lesson that reflects an honest work ethic.

Kathy Hastings, Gainesville

Miller’s Ale House, which has a longstanding location in north Naples, has put plans for a new pub in south Naples on hold. TIM ATEN / NAPLES FLORIDA WEEKLY

Q: Is Miller’s Ale House still planning to build a location on Restaurant Row in South Naples?

– Ana Purdom, East Naples ON: Unfortunately, the pandemic has put expansion plans for Miller’s Ale House, which already operates a long-standing restaurant and bar in north Naples, on hold.

“We currently have no plans to open a new location in south Naples,” said a company representative in the fall of this year.

Miller’s Ale House, a Florida-based pub chain with more than 90 locations, closed a deal earlier this year to occupy the central space on Restaurant Row between Pollo Tropical and the now-closed Pei Wei, but then the reaction caught on the coronavirus for uncertainty.

“Miller’s Ale House terminated its lease during the due diligence phase,” said Charlie Ladd, president of Barron Commercial Development, the company that works with Amera Corp 41 East. Ladd hopes the deal can resume there once the economy and the hospitality industry stabilize.

Q: There’s a new building (probably a restaurant) in Logan Landings across the pond from Oak & Stone. Any word what that could be? – Dave Winterling, North Naples

ON: Felipe’s Mexican Taqueria is slated to open this month in the terminal unit near the Logan Boulevard entrance in Logan Landings, the Sprouts-anchored retail hub in northern Naples. Overhead doors at this second location in Naples for Felipe’s will be able to create an open air experience in the 4,000 square meter area of the restaurant and bar.

The building under construction in Logan near the intersection of Immokalee Road is due for completion next fall and will house a First Watch daytime café. This First Watch will be one of the first restaurants in the national chain to have an indoor / outdoor bar and a waterfront terrace. The restaurant will share the building with a second store in an adjacent 1,500 square foot unit that is still available.

New mall

Q: I noticed a Publix Coming Soon sign in South Naples at US 41 and Sandpiper Drive / Greenway Road, about two miles south of Manatee Road. Any information on that? – KT, East Naples

ON: Publix will anchor Fiddler’s Creek Plaza, a neighborhood retail center at the US 41 East entrance to Fiddler’s Creek Housing Development, southeast of Collier Boulevard.

Felipe's Mexican taqueria is slated to open shortly in this terminal at Logan Landings in north Naples.

Halvorsen Holdings, a Boca Raton-based developer, broke ground in August for the 60,000-square-foot mall, which is slated to be completed by early summer 2021, said Caroline Peek, a Halvorsen spokeswoman. One of the grocer’s newest store models, the 48,000-square-foot Publix will feature an updated layout with a mezzanine floor and a drive-through pharmacy.

The center’s additional 12,000 square feet of retail space will include a nearly 3,000 square foot restaurant with an outdoor terrace at one end, although Ms. Peek has not yet had any additional information about the future dining area. “They are currently looking for service providers, restaurants and retailers to fill the remaining space,” she said. According to a press release, there are also three outparcels available for sale or lease at this location.

correction

In the November 26th restaurant name change column, a local restaurant name was accidentally changed. Seventh South Craft Food + Drink is the name the new owners gave the former Seventh Avenue Social at 849 Seventh Ave. S. have given in downtown Naples. |

Summary: Inter Miami CF 2, CF Montreal 1

Summary: Inter Miami CF 2, CF Montreal 1

Joaquin Torres had given Montréal the lead in the first half but Higuain struck twice in the second half to give Miami a much-needed first win since May 16 and only a third win of the season.

At the beginning, however, it looked like a seventh loss in eight games for the men of Phil Neville. Nick Marsman made a rebound after a cross from Mathieu Choinière in the 20th minute, which Joaquin Torres gladly used. The Argentine’s shot from just over six yards hit the back of the net and brought Miami on its heels.

However, Miami was pardoned with a 49th-minute penalty. Federico Higuain was knocked out in the penalty area and referee Victor Rivas called for a penalty, much to the shock of the entire Montréal team, which simulation claimed. Gonzalo Higuain hit the spot and scored the fraternal equalizer.

Miami made the comeback when Rudy Camacho gave the ball away in his own penalty area and Gonzalo Higuain gave his side a clear chance to lead his side in the 69th minute. The former Real Madrid striker rolled the ball off the edge of the box, but James Pantemis appeared to have made a spectacular save only when the ball flew off his palms and hit the net in agony.

Pantemis rehabilitated himself by extending a leg to defeat Robbie Robinson after the former MLS SuperDraft No. 1 aggregate slid through the gate. With their backs to the wall, Montréal had no more answers to Miami’s comeback performance and suffered a disappointing defeat when the DRV-PNK stadium cheered at the final whistle.

FL’s new COVID cases have spiked to 21,683 in one day — the highest since March 2020

FL's new COVID cases have spiked to 21,683 in one day -- the highest since March 2020

COVID-19 cases in Florida have reached a new milestone — 21,683 new cases in one day — the largest number since early March 2020, when Floridians had little information about the mysterious coronavirus and the disease that became COVID-19.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published the daily numbers of COVID-19 cases since March 2, 2020.

On Saturday, the agency reported that Florida’s cases had spiked to 21,683, based on July 30 data. The closest numbers before that were 19,334 cases on Jan. 7, 2021, and 19,136 cases on Jan. 8, 2021.

(The CDC data shows a figure of 30,531 cases on Jan. 2, 2021, but the day before, there were no cases, on New Year’s Day, so the two days expected to be combined.)

Also on Saturday, the CDC reported 101,171 new COVID cases nationwide, up from 83,062 the day before.

Florida’s cases also increased, from 17,093 on July 29 to the 21,683 on July 30.

The spikes have been of concern, as a more contagious variant called Delta has been sweeping the country.

Despite the rising number of cases, Gov. Ron DeSantis has been adamant about fighting all COVID-related mandates and restrictions, such as lockdowns and mask mandates, particularly the use of masks at schools.

In fact, DeSantis is now in a clash with his executive power as the state’s chief executive and the Florida Constitution, which says school boards shall operate, control and supervise all free public schools.

An executive order by the governor Friday threatens to withhold state-controlled funding from school districts that do not comply with constitutional freedoms and parent rights related to face-masking requirements at schools.

The short-term rental market in Hall County is heating up

The short-term rental market in Hall County is heating up

Evolve Vacation Rental, which manages seven short-term rentals in Hall County, had relatively stable bookings from 2020 to 2021, according to a statement from Ashley Taylor, Evolve’s senior manager of communications. This could be evidence of the increasing popularity of vacation rentals as a safer travel option during the pandemic, Taylor wrote.

“During the height of COVID, most guests chose to stay closer to home, with 54.2% traveling from locations less than 100 miles from Hall County between March and June 2020, up from 41.4% over the same period in 2021, “Taylor wrote.

During the summer, Morrill said they had a lot of families wanting a typical summer vacation, renting out their property on the lake, but they also rented to some people who wanted a place to relax after they got one lost loved ones to COVID -19 in the last year. Some even used the home as a place to reunite several family members after a loss, she said.

They put in place a flexible cancellation policy that allows guests to cancel up to 24 hours in advance, Morrill said, which will give guests more security during the pandemic when plans could be changed quickly. About half of her guests came from abroad, she said. They’ll be busy until mid-August, she said, but expect business to slow down in the fall with the start of school, the slightly cooler weather, and concerns about the COVID-19 delta variant and a recent spike in COVID-19 cases could be in the area.

In March 2019, the district changed its ordinance on short-term rent to allow apartments in each zoning district for short-term rental with the approval of a business license from the district. At short notice, two to 30 nights are defined. By the end of 2019, the district had 64 active business licenses. There are now 131 active business licenses contributing $ 135,537 in tax revenue through July this year.

The increased activity has also caused some discomfort. The Hall County Marshal’s office had 55 short-term rental-related cases on July 29 this year and just 10 cases last year, with less activity during times when COVID-19 case numbers were much higher.

Neighbors can call a helpline if they have complaints about a nearby rental property and the complaint must be resolved within an hour or the landlord risks a violation.

Marshal’s Office Capt. Barry Shaw said the complaints they most commonly get are about noise or people parking in the wrong places. They try to solve most problems without posting a quote, Shaw said, although it doesn’t always make everyone happy.

“Most of the friction comes from a permanent resident who has a rental apartment next door,” Shaw said. “They tell me, ‘It’s like having people next to me on vacation every day of the week.'”

Most cases are settled shortly after the owner is notified of a complaint, he said.

Naples Florida Beach Hotel Athens Group for the protection of the golf course tennis center

Robert Patten Burns

Naples City employees, starting with the city attorney, must remind the Athens Group to keep their original promise to permanently preserve and protect the existing 18-hole golf course and tennis center. The citizens of Naples recently made it clear that this is what they expect.

Here’s why.

Documents approved for the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club by a previous city council in 2019 include a Master Site Plan covering 104.6 acres. All 18-hole of the existing Jack Nicklaus design, championship golf course is shown, including every tee, fairway, putting green, sand trap, practice area and lake, as well as a field club with six tennis courts, all of which are permitted uses in the recreational and open space district .

The Naples Beach Hotel.

An ALTA / NSPS Land Title Survey was also submitted by the Athens Group and approved in 2019. Here, too, the same uses are shown as in the Master Site Plan.

Both are legally valid documents that are valid on the 104.6 hectares of the PLANNED DEVELOPMENT DOCUMENT FOR NEAPLES BEACH CLUB RESIDENCES AND GOLF COURSE Regulation 19-R6. It was approved by the city council in 2019.

In order to provide even more certainty that regulation 19-R6 is in force, the site plan 19-SP18 was presented by Erica Martin, interim planning director, during a staff presentation at the public hearing of the city council on March 25th. It shows all of the same uses of the Master Site Plan and ALTA Land Title Survey on the same 104.6 acres. The approved master site plan is just as enforceable as all other requirements of regulation 19-R6 outlined by it, such as building dimensions, heights, recesses and lengths up to the height of final monuments at entrance monuments.

Without further action by the current city council, all uses that are part of City Ordinance 19-R6 must be retained by the Athens Group “as is”. Any revision of the approved site plan 19-SP18 is restricted to these uses by the City Code. These uses, like any other property in Naples, must be kept in normal operating condition.

The Athens Group would need to provide a revised site plan if they wanted to make changes to Site Plan 19-SP18. For example, a note in the sales brochure distributed by the Athens Group. It shows a 10-hole golf course on approximately 70 acres of the 104.6 acres. Are 70 hectares a coincidence or did Athens ask golf course designer Tom Fazio to design a course on 70 hectares?

The approved planned development and indefinite easement specifies that “at least seventy (70) acres of the concession area remain in open space”. This entitles the city to a reduction in the premium for flood insurance. However, no maximum acres are set, and the entire existing 104.6 hectares of the golf course will also qualify.

Therefore, a city council is allowed to preserve 104.6 hectares that have already been approved in Site Plan 19-SP18. As provided in regulation 2019-14330, permanent easement, according to paragraph 5, enforcement by the city: “The city can at any time request the enforcement of the easement according to paragraph 6, notification of default.”

More:Guest opinion: The eventful history of the ‘Beach Club’ continues

The Athens Marketing Department continues to publish a sales brochure showing a 10-hole golf course on 70 hectares. Athens must forego a 10-hole golf course plan and keep its original promises. Athens should cease pursuit of trendy, fashionable sports activities and hold on to traditions, especially here in southwest Florida. Golf and tennis are age-old games, with athletic skills that have developed over the course of life, whether beginner or advanced. These are individual tests that do not require these two games to be reinvented.

If Athens comes up with a site plan for something less than the current 104.6 hectare Jack Nicklaus championship golf course, the city council should reject it.

Robert Patten Burns, who lives in Naples, is an architect / city planner in Iowa and a course assessor for Golfweek magazine, as well as an officer for the rules of the PGA of the Iowa section.

Bromell’s St. Pete’s Tray aims to replace Bolt on the Olympic 100-meter podium

Bromell's St. Pete's Tray aims to replace Bolt on the Olympic 100-meter podium

TOKYO (AP) – There will be a new fastest man in the Olympic Games who will be crowned on Sunday when the 100-meter run will be run without Usain Bolt in the finals for the first time since 2008.

The favorite for the gold medal is the 26-year-old American sprinter Trayvon Bromell from St. Petersburg, Florida. The race is the marquee of the Olympic Games and rounds off a busy night in the Olympic Stadium.

Ban on “soul cap” at the Olympic Games shows a lack of diversity in swimming

The newly crowned Olympic champion Sunisa Lee will try to increase her medal wins in the finals on the uneven bars, while the Americans Jade Carey and MyKayla Skinner face medal threats in the jump finals.

Here are some things to check out (all east):

TRACK & FIELD

There will be a new gold medalist in the Olympic Games marquee race, and it could be an American to take over the seat vacated by Usain Bolt’s resignation.

Absolutely impossible; Gymnasts struggle with the imperfect

Bolt has won gold in the men’s 100m three times in a row, but he’s gotten further in his life now and there is a chance for a new star. Trayvon Bromell doesn’t have the same swagger as Bolt, but he’s got speed.

The 26-year-old from Florida is a humble sprinter in a showman event. Bromell is the favorite in Sunday’s gold medal race. He is challenged by teammate Ronnie Baker, Andre De Grasse from Canada and Akani Simbine from South Africa.

Bromell won US Olympic victories and also has the best time of 2021 at 9.77 seconds. The sports books believe that Bromell will win and he is the favorite for the gold.

The Olympic Stadium will be the centerpiece of coverage of the Tokyo Games on Sunday evening, with medals also in the women’s 100-meter hurdles and the men’s long jump. NBC’s prime time coverage begins at 7:00 p.m. and will also include the women’s diving springboard finals and an elimination match in women’s beach volleyball.

Kevin Durant becomes Team USA’s all-time top scorer

GYMNASTICS

Simone Biles takes another night off in Tokyo, where she cannot compete due to mental health problems. She withdrew from the women’s team final, the women’s all-round competition, and will not take part in the uneven bars or the jump on Sunday.

So it will be the newly crowned Olympic champion Sunisa Lee who wants to top up her prey in the uneven bars finals. Lee and the Belgian Nina Derwael are the big favorites on the podium.

Americans Jade Carey and MyKayla Skinner achieved two of the four best results in the jump during qualification and will both be medal threats in the final. Skinner made it to the final when reigning Olympic champion Biles was eliminated.

Medals are also awarded in the men’s floor exercise, pommel horse and distilling rings. The coverage will be live at 4am on Peacock with encore presentations during prime time coverage on NBC.

Former local athlete wins first Olympic medal for Brazil in tennis

BASKETBALL

The U.S. women’s basketball team will continue their hunt for a seventh consecutive gold medal as Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi lead the Americans in their final group match against France.

The women are 2-0 in the group game. The game against France will air at 12:40 p.m. on the USA Network.

For the men, Slovenia is in the foreground against the reigning world champion Spain.

Luka Doncic has had a spectacular Olympics for Slovenia and is the top scorer in Tokyo; The Slovenian men’s national team is always 15: 0 when he is in the line-up.

The game will determine the winner of Group C and secure a place in the top four in the quarter-finals – but both Slovenia and Spain will reach the quarter-finals, win or lose. The game is on the USA Network at 4:20 a.m.

Katie Ledecky wins 2nd gold in Tokyo over 800m free

IN OTHER NOTABLE PROMOTIONS

The women’s beach volleyball elimination rounds will be broadcast live on both NBC and CNBC starting at 8:00 p.m. in prime time

Novak Djokovic’s quest for the Golden Slam ended and the world’s best men’s tennis player left Tokyo without a single medal. Alexander Zverev of Germany defeated Djokovic and will play Karen Khachanov from the Russian Olympic Committee in the gold medal match live in front of the late viewers on The Olympic Channel with a replay in the afternoon on the USA Network.

The US men’s water polo team plays Greece live at prime time on CNBC, which also broadcasts the men’s beach volleyball elimination round and the men’s fencing team’s foil final.

CNBC will also be hosting live the women’s field hockey quarter-finals and the women’s bronze and gold double badminton games.

Miami CB Howard during training hopes for termination of contract

Miami CB Howard during training hopes for termination of contract

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard made a limited return to training Saturday, saying he hopes to resolve his contract dispute in order to stay on the team.

Howard took to Instagram Tuesday night to request a trade over his displeasure with his contract. Howard was an all-pro selection in 2020 after leading the NFL with 10 interceptions.

Howard, who was selected in the second round in 2016, signed a five-year, $ 75 million contract extension in May 2019 that lasts four years. The deal made him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback at the time, but he’s fallen to sixth place since then.

One of the players who overtook him: teammate Byron Jones, whom the Dolphins signed to a five-year $ 82.1 million deal in the 2020 off-season.

“Sure, I hope it gets better,” said Howard. “It’s a process. I hear this and hear that, but nothing is done right now. At the moment I’m just out here every day to support the team and work out here. “

Howard, who skipped the entire offseason program and fined himself more than $ 90,000 for missing the mandatory minicamp, said he will see if he would be willing to attend preseason games in due course.

“In every relationship there are sometimes problems, but we are working on them and will continue to have dialogue and communication,” said Dolphins coach Brian Flores on Friday morning during an appearance on the NFL Network. “Hopefully we can work this through. We will just continue the dialogue and communication. Now that’s only part of it. “

When asked if he’s more optimistic about renewing his contract since posting his Instagram post, Howard said, “It’s because of the Dolphins. I’m only here with my teammates and enjoy every moment with my teammates. “

The latest job report shows that Leon County employed 149,517 people in June, 532 more than the previous month. The unemployment rate in June was 5.4%, compared to 4.5% last month. A year ago the unemployment rate was 8.8% in June 2020. In June 2019 the unemployment rate was 2.9%.

Due to the COVID pandemic, job comparisons 2020 are not as meaningful as comparisons with job data from 2019. Therefore, the Leon County Jobs Report provided below contains data for 2019.

In June 2021, 2,236 more people were employed than in June 2019, but around 15,300 more than in June 2020.

The number of people in employment – job seekers – was 157,984, 4,835 more than reported in June 2019.

The graph below shows Leon County’s monthly employment over the past 37 months, using a 12-month average trend line. The highlighted numbers refer to the employment level for the month of June back to 2018.

At the state level, 41,000 jobs were created in June compared to April 2021. The unemployment rate in June rose from 5.0% in May to 5.7%.

5-star WR really enjoys Gainesville

5-star WR really enjoys Gainesville

Florida and trainer Dan Mullen are trying to win a five-star recruit in consecutive classes. Mullen landed defensive tackle Gervon Dexter in 2020 and cornerback Jason Marshall in 2021. The Gators are in a good place for two five-star prospects this cycle – defensive lineman Walter Nolen and wide receiver Evan Stewart. Nolen visited Texas A&M that weekend while Stewart had another successful visit to the swamp.

“It was good,” Stewart said on Friday, according to Swamp247. “It feels good to be back. It feels a bit like home, so I’m enjoying it right now. “

One of the major factors in the Gators’ favor is the idea that Stewart is teaming up with his 7v7 teammate and Florida quarterback engagement Nick Evers. He traveled to Gainesville with the Evers family.

Evers and Stewart returned to campus for the Great Gator Grill Out on Saturday before returning to Texas.

Stewart said all schools competing for his promise are head to head. He mentioned that his best schools are Florida, LSU, and Alabama, with his Texas home school falling out of the picture. He believes that when he goes to each school, the game day environment will determine where he ends up. Stewart plans to visit the Gators again when they play against Alabama.

Tampa Bay Hospitals audible alarm with wave of delta variant cases

Patch News

TAMPA, FL – Tampa Bay health professionals sound the alarm as the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus sweeps through the area and hospitals struggle to keep up with the rising patient counts due to this more virulent strain of the coronavirus.

Some hospital groups have already suspended elective procedures and operations in the face of the growing hospital count.

AdventHealth announced on Friday that it is postponing elective procedures that require overnight stays at its Wesley Chapel hospital starting Monday.

No other West Florida Division AdventHealth hospitals are currently affected.

AdventHealth said it will continue to perform same-day procedures that do not require an overnight stay at Wesley Chapel Hospital for the time being.

The hospital group said the decision will allow them to plan for increased hospital bed needs as coronavirus rates continue to rise in Florida due to the introduction of the Delta variant of the virus.

AdventHealth found that more than 90 percent of its patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the health group’s nationwide system are unvaccinated.

“AdventHealth continues to see a significant increase in COVID-19 cases at its West Florida facilities and has surpassed our highest peak since the pandemic began in 2020,” AdventHealth said in a press release. “We have seen an increase in COVID hospital admissions at AdventHealth Hospitals in Hardee, Highlands, Hillsborough, Marion, Pasco and Pinellas.”

If cases continue to rise, AdventHealth assures the public that they have adequate personal protective equipment, ventilators and specialty equipment to quickly and safely convert existing rooms in the hospital into standard patient rooms or intensive care rooms for coronavirus patients.

In addition, the AdventHealth Wesley Chapel will limit the number of visitors from Monday. Other AdventHealth Hospitals in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas will begin updating visiting guidelines as needed later this week.

On Wednesday, the BayCare Health System announced that it would limit elective procedures that require overnight stays in Hillsborough and Polk hospitals due to the increasing number of patients being hospitalized with the coronavirus.

In a press release, BayCare Health said that COVID patients in BayCare hospitals have more than tripled in the past three weeks.

Affected hospitals include St. Joseph’s, St. Joseph’s Children’s, and St. Joseph’s Women’s in Tampa; St. Josephs north in Lutz; St. Joseph’s South in Riverview; South Florida Baptist in Plant City; Bartow Regional Medical Center; Winter Haven and Winter Haven ladies.

St. Joseph’s, Winter Haven, and Winter Haven Women’s paused voting Thursday. The other facilities in Hillsborough and Polk Counties will be on hold on Monday.

BayCare hospitals in Pinellas and Pasco counties are not affected.

“Our priority is always patient safety and the assurance that we are available to meet the acute health needs of our communities,” said Glenn Waters, BayCare’s chief operating officer. “This step helps us to continue to have the capacity to meet these needs.”

Tampa General Hospital has yet to announce a similar postponement of voting.

TGH postponed elective surgeries and procedures during the peak of the pandemic last year and did not resume until May 4.

However, the hospital said that coronavirus cases at its facilities “have increased dramatically in the past three weeks, more than tripled and remain very volatile”.

The hospital found that 80 percent of the coronavirus patients it sees haven’t been vaccinated.

“It’s important that people get vaccinated, especially right now,” said Dr. Peggy Duggan, Tampa General Chief Medical Officer. “What we are seeing now is an unvaccinated pandemic.”

Duggan said the hospital also treats younger patients. During the first wave of the disease last year, the average age of patients in the Tampa General ICU was in the mid-1970s. It’s 42 years old now, she said.

“The risk of the Delta variant is high, and if you’ve had COVID in the past, you can still get this variant – a common misconception among people – and you can give it to each other,” Duggan said. “It is such a highly contagious disease – about 60 percent more contagious – that entire households are currently receiving the Delta variant, whereas in the past one or two people could avoid infection.”

In the past year, the elderly, people with pre-existing conditions, and healthcare workers received the vaccine more frequently. The higher incidence in younger and healthier people is now, Duggan said, because “they are the last group to get vaccinated and take vaccination seriously”.

Those who have been fully vaccinated can still get infected, but their symptoms are generally milder and they are less likely to need hospital treatment, she said.

For those who haven’t been vaccinated, the risks are greatly increased with this highly contagious new strain, which was first identified in December 2020 and quickly became the dominant strain of the virus in India and the UK, Duggan said.

This month, Florida accounted for about 20 percent of the new COVID-19 cases in the United States.

“I think people have a tendency to say, ‘This is not going to happen to me’ and if it does happen to them, it may be too late,” said Dr. Seetha Lakshmi, Tampa General Medical Director for Global Emerging Diseases Institute and Assistant Professor at USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

“The human suffering and death that I see today is not necessary – it is so preventable,” said Lakshmi. “It just breaks my heart. The key message is that while the vaccine won’t stop you from getting the disease, it will stop you from seeing us in intensive care and losing your life.”

Some parents may have been reluctant to vaccinate their teenagers after hearing of rare cases of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart, in some teenagers who received the vaccine. However, Lakshmi points to recent data from the Advisory Committee on Vaccination Practices, which underscores the clear benefit of the vaccine.

In 674 confirmed cases, young men developed the disease after the second dose of vaccine, but the cases were very mild, no prescription drugs were required (only Aleve or Advil required), and there were no deaths.

There are now more than 11 million young adults aged 18 to 24 years vaccinated in the United States.

“ACIP came out and said, ‘Please get the vaccine and that’s why: for every million doses of vaccine given to adolescents, we’re preventing 215 admissions, 71 admissions to the intensive care unit and two deaths in that age group compared to 56 cases of mild illness “. Myocarditis, ‘”said Lakshmi.

The surge in delta variant cases has been understandably difficult for some frontline health workers who have fallen back into the physical and emotional whirlwind of caring for COVID patients struggling for their lives.

Now they are faced with a harrowing new reality of seeing patients getting closer to their old age.

“Our employees are exhausted from the year they have passed and some are frustrated because it feels preventable,” said Duggan. “And when you, as a young doctor, start looking at your patients and they look like you – and could be you – it affects you differently. You look at yourself and it’s tough. “

Both doctors said the best thing residents can do for themselves and their families is to get vaccinated.

“It will protect you, your family and the community,” said Duggan. “It is really imperative that we all take safety precautions based on common sense. For example, in my own practice, I have restricted going out and wearing a mask when I go to the grocery store, passing this virus on to someone else – and that’s the last thing I want to do.

“It doesn’t have to last long. If we can continue to take precautions and move the vaccination rate needle, that will really make a difference. We all wanted to get out of this pandemic, but we’re back. “So we have to take these steps to get us out of harm’s way,” she said.

On Wednesday, the CDC issued a recommendation that all residents should wear masks in indoor public spaces, including schools.

In Florida, 66 out of 67 counties are listed with “high” coronavirus transmission rates in the community. Glades County is the only Florida county that has a “significant” level of community carryover listed.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider a county to be “high” transmission if there have been 100 or more cases of the coronavirus per 100,000 population or a test positive rate of 10 percent or more in the past seven days.

Five Florida counties – Duval, Hillsborough, Orange, Miami-Dade, and Broward – had 5,000 or more new cases in the past seven days, according to the CDC’s data tracker.

The national average is 49 new cases per 100,000 people per day, more than three times the average rate in the United States of about 16 new cases per 100,000 people per day.

Qatar Airways was recently named the best airline in the world in 2021 by AirlineRatings.com. According to the Australia-based Aviation Safety and Product Evaluation Agency, this is largely due to their “innovation, product and industry leadership, as well as their exceptional commitment to keeping the world’s critical long-haul air routes open during COVID-19. ”

The airline made its debut on July 20, 2021 at Miami International Airport with its FIFA World Cup 2022 livery in the USA. It was also the occasion for the airline to announce that it will now fly daily from Doha to Miami, operated by Boeing 777-300. Business class will now be exclusively QSuites. That means doors can be closed for privacy and certain middle seats can be combined into two- or four-seat configurations, which is especially helpful if you are traveling as a family.

Qatar Airways has been serving this route since June 2014 with popular onward flights – before the pandemic – to India, Thailand, Pakistan and Nepal, shares Eric Odone, Vice-President of Sales for Americas, with Forbes. Meanwhile, traffic has shifted from this route to the Maldives and South Africa – two of the airlines’ newest destinations – as well as Kenya and Tanzania.

Unlike most airlines, Qatar Airways has never stopped flying and this has allowed them to gradually adapt to the changes caused by Covid-19. “We have systematically ensured that everyone gets a mask, a pair of gloves and hand disinfectant wipes,” said Mr Odone. They also offer “Travel With Confidence” kits that include hand sanitizer, masks and gloves. “We were the first airline in the US to mandate masks. At the height of the pandemic, we provided face shields to passengers. The crews were in full PPE uniforms. We have high standards of hygiene.

How are you preparing for the 2022 FIFA World Cup? “Qatar didn’t reopen until July 12th,” said Mr. Ordone. “As for the country itself, the stadiums are actually finished – they look absolutely fantastic, lots of new hotels – the preparations never really stopped. For us at Qatar Airways, it is more about making a good estimate of the volume of travel, because there will be a mix of scheduled and charter flights, especially from the Latin American market. We are very happy about it.”

FAMU, President surprises graduates with debt settlement

FAMU, President surprises graduates with debt settlement

Florida A&M University, whose motto is “Excellence with Caring,” has allocated over $ 16 million to pay off outstanding student debts, President Larry Robinson said Saturday morning.

Robinson made the announcement towards the end of graduation ceremonies for 2020 graduate students at the School of Business & Industry, College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences / Institute of Public Health and School of Environment at Lawson Center.

It was one of four ceremonies held on Saturday and Sunday for Class 2020 graduates who were given the opportunity to attend a personal start after previously being denied due to the COVID pandemic.

“In the past year and a half, the university has provided over $ 16 million in student benefits and debt relief under federal CARES,” said Robinson. “Some of you are going to leave us with a lot of debts that some of your predecessors and I want you to understand how much, how important it is for us to enable you to get out in the world and achieve a much better start than you otherwise it could, and for those of you who stay with us, this will be a tremendous opportunity for you too. “

Larry Robinson, President of Florida A&M University, speaks during a personal ceremony at the Lawson Center prior to the 2020 graduating class on Saturday morning, July 31, 2021.

The number of students who were awarded the debt relief grant was not immediately available.

The American Rescue Plan Act provided nearly $ 40 billion in aid funds for higher education, including more than $ 2.2 billion for colleges and universities in Florida.

An additional $ 3 billion has been allocated to Historicly Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and other institutions that serve minorities.

William E. Hudson, Jr., vice president of student affairs, said the money was used to pay outstanding tuition fees and student fee balances in the 2020-2021 school year.

“Offsetting student balances from last school year was one way to implement our motto … by helping students and their families through the COVID-19 pandemic,” Hudson said in a press release Saturday morning. “It prevents them from having to take out loans to pay off their unpaid balance. It was a tough year for our students and their families. ”

Florida A&M University will recognize approximately 150 2020 graduates in a personal ceremony at the Lawson Center on Saturday morning, July 31, 2021.

FAMU’s action reflects similar steps being taken at universities across the country, including several historically black colleges and universities.

Among them is Clark Atlanta University, which last week said it was using the funds to cancel student debt from spring 2020 through summer 2021.

Virginia State University announced that it will use funding from the CARES Act to pay off student debts for tuition and fees during the period. Virginia Union University said it would reduce the debt of more than 1,300 students.

SBI graduate offers challenge: “Be excellent” and give something back to FAMU

Marcelia Freeman, a financial services executive for Clearlake Capital Group in Santa Monica, California, was the keynote speaker for the ceremonies on Saturday at 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Tallahassee national civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump holds starts on Sunday at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Freeman is a 2005 graduate of FAMU School & Industry’s five-year MBA program, which earned a second MBA from Harvard in 2010.

Florida A&M University will recognize approximately 150 2020 graduates in a personal ceremony at the Lawson Center on Saturday morning, July 31, 2021.

Freeman emphasized to the graduates the importance of being prepared, having strong mentors, and being flexible when they step into the real world.

“Keep an eye on price, which can change over time,” said Freeman, who began her career in finance and investment at JP Morgan Chase.

There, she said, she had “access to people and ideas that our ancestors could never have imagined”.

“I want you to be excellent in every way every day,” she said.

While she was successful in her career, Williams said she also battled depression, corporate bias, and paid less than others at the table.

Marcelia Freeman speaks during a personal ceremony at the Lawson Center on Saturday morning, July 31, 2021, ahead of the 2020 graduate class of Florida A&M University.

Williams works in investor relations and product management at Clearlake, a technology and industry-focused private equity firm “run by blacks”.

She also sits on the prestigious Council on Foreign Relations and sits on the board of the FAMU Foundation.

She said it is important to find balance in life and understand your self worth.

“Today I carry people, not loads,” she said. “I challenge you to find out what your superpowers are; the power to be the authentic you. “

Describing herself as “not a speaker but a truth-teller,” Williams concluded with a challenge to the graduates: give something back to FAMU.

“I hope you will consider supporting the Foundation (FAMU) before you leave campus,” she said. “I don’t care if you had to stand in line for financial help. It’s about those who come after you and pave a way for them. I’ll even send you up to $ 100,000 dollar for dollar. You can’t break my bag, so let’s see what you can do. “
