Number 2 seeded Denis Shapovalov from Canada was on the alert before beating Spaniard Pablo Andujar at the St. Petersburg Open in Russia on Wednesday 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 0 in the second round recovered.
Eight of Shapovalov’s 11 aces came over the second and third sets. He dominated the decision set, gaining 72 percent of his return points and losing just 10 points overall.
Top seed and defending champion Andrey Rublev from Russia had it easier in his first game when he defeated Belarusian Ilya Ivashka 6: 4, 6: 4. Compatriot Karen Khachanov also made progress in front of the fans in his home country when the number 6 seeded win won a match of the last 32 against French Adrian Mannarino 6: 3, 6: 3.
In the only surprise of the day, the German Jan-Lennard Struff eliminated the number 7 seeded Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan 6: 4, 6: 3. In the quarter-finals, Struff meets Shapovalov.
First bank opening
Number 3 seeded Matteo Berrettini from Italy fended off a defeat in the first set in the tiebreaker and defeated Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili 6: 7 (5), 6: 2, 6: 3 and was one of the first players to reach the quarter-finals in Vienna.
Berrettini meets 18-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated British Andy Murray in a whopping 2 hours and 6 minutes 6: 3, 6: 4. Alcaraz saved 8 out of 10 breakpoints he faced while Murray saved 10 out of 15.
In the round of 32, the Italian, seventh seeded Jannik Sinner, defeated American Reilly Opelka 6: 4, 6: 2 and number 8 seed Diego Schwartzman from Argentina defeated Italian Fabio Fognini 6: 2, 7: 5.
