Alachua County Legislative Delegation Hearing hears 2022 meeting requests from politicians and voters

Alachua County Legislative Delegation Hearing hears 2022 meeting requests from politicians and voters

For Sabrina Davis, the Alachua County Legislative Assembly was more than a hearing for local city and county governments to seek funding.

Davis urged the delegation to consider pending laws in January that would increase the number of people who can file lawsuits against hospitals for medical homicide and to keep an eye on their case.

“My case is real,” she said, holding back tears. “My case is written in black and white.”

Davis was one of 18 north central Florida residents and leaders who spoke at the hearing on Monday. The delegation consisting of Sen. Keith Perry and Reps. Chuck Clemons, Chuck Brannan, and Yvonne Hayes Hinson also heard from local city and county officials asking for funding and assistance.

Gainesville Mayor Lauren Poe asked for additional assistance with the pandemic, continued support for the police breaker program, and funding to keep the city streets, especially around the university, safer.

Newberry Mayor Jordan Marlowe asked for funds to be raised to support key city projects, including a new meat processing facility and water drainage system.

Marlowe says his goal is to make Newberry the “North Central Florida Agricultural Center” and hopes the delegation will help him.

Ken Cornell, Commissioner for Alachua County, spoke about the success of Celebration Pointe and other development and social programs the county has used.

Instead, Cornell asked the delegation to pay more attention to the smaller towns in the county.

“When our smaller cities come to you, please take special care to listen,” he said. “We stand behind them.”

8th District Public Defender Stacy Scott voted for funding to hire and retain attorneys for the Public Defender’s Office.

She asked for funding to raise wages and end incentives, a request that was repeated by other lawyers from the 8th Judicial District Criminal Conflict and Regional Counsel and Florida Guardian ad litem program.
