Tampa Mexican restaurant celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with authentic dishes

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – This Hispanic Heritage Month 8 On Your Side will feature several Hispanic owned companies in Tampa Bay to celebrate their culture’s impact on the community.

This week, Brianda Villegas from 8 On Your Side visited Loli’s Mexican Cravings, a restaurant that has been making authentic and hearty food for about seven years.

“This month we have to eat Latin American food and promote it to those who have not tried it yet,” said co-founder Josue Garcia.

The co-founders of Loli, Josue and Maria Dolores “Lola” Garcia, emigrated to the USA with the American dream of having their own restaurant in the early 2000s.

After moving from Guanajuato, Mexico, the couple worked in the catering trade as cooks.
During those first years in the United States, Lola cooked batches of tamales for her employees.

Her husband Josue said her cooking skills caught many in the community and turned a hobby into a small catering business.

The couple’s success grew and in a few years they were able to open their first restaurant in the US called “Loli’s”, after the nickname Josue Lola gave when they started dating.

“It’s a lot of work, but the most important thing is that my wife Lola has a lot of talent,” said Josue.

Now, the pink walls of Loli’s Mexican Cravings have opened their doors to those who want to appreciate the influence of food on Tampa Bay culture.

“It means a lot that we can share our culture with others and share what makes our background so great,” said Miguel Martinez.

Loli’s Mexican Cravings has multiple locations in Tampa Bay and serves authentic Mexican food and drinks. You can find their menu and locations on their website. Loli’s also plans to open its fifth location in Westshore within a month.
