GAINESVILLE, Florida (WCJB) – Access to affordable housing for people with disabilities is growing, one house at a time.

The city of Gainesville, Alachua County and state officials joined the Gainesville Housing Authority to cut the ribbon for TRIO in North Lincoln Heights. Funding came from the Gainesville Housing Development Management Corporation, a not-for-profit real estate company, and the city and county. Without a funding partner, Pamela Davis, CEO of the Gainesville Housing Authority, said the project would not be possible.

“$ 30,000 put together in HOME funds and the county donated $ 150,000 to the TRIO project, and then the Gainesville Housing Authority donated an additional $ 200,000,” said Davis. So it is this cooperation to close the gaps in the financing needs. “

The project comprises three handicapped accessible residential units, each with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The new homes are specially designed for low-income elderly, disabled, special needs or veterans.

“Raise expectations and pride in the housing stock the Gainesville Housing Authority produces for communities,” said State Representative Yvonne Hayes-Hinson. “These houses look like real houses and I think the residents can be proud of them. I think the community can be proud of them. “
