Commissioner Gail Johnson is helping Cynthia Chestnut to replace her on the Gainesville City Commission

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – Commissioner Gail Johnson said she supported Cynthia Chestnut at a press conference Monday at Gainesville City Hall.

Chestnut announced their run at the event. Johnson supports Chestnut as her successor.

Johnson submitted her resignation letter to city commissioners, citing negative experiences with city manager Lee Feldman. In the meantime he has offered to resign. Johnson said she believes Chestnut will put residents first.

“In addition to Dr. To stand up to Cynthia Chestnut, a woman I’ve known since childhood, ”said Johnson. “She paved the way for me and she is a woman I stood on shoulders and a woman who said to me very lovingly in these turbulent times in our city: ‘I will take this torch Gail.'”

The four other candidates running for the seat are Scherwin Henry, Matt Howland, Patrick Ingle and Gabe Kaimowitz.

The special election is scheduled for November 12th.
