Gainesville For All celebrates its fifth anniversary with a live stream

Gainesville For All celebrates its fifth anniversary with a live stream

Gainesville For All volunteers will take some time this week to reflect on the accomplishments of the nonprofit’s first five years while acknowledging that there is still much to do during a livestream event on Wednesday.

Gainesville For All is a group focused on promoting systematic change and solutions to long-standing inequalities along racial lines. Launched on the initiative of Gainesville Sun, the group recently established its own charter as an independent agency.

For the past five years, the group has campaigned for free bus fares, pushed for a smoking ban for young people aged 21 and over, and worked on bail reform for people detained for minor offenses.

Recently, the Gainesville Empowerment Zone Family Learning Center was launched, an early learning center for babies up to four years old at Metcalfe Elementary School.

For the anniversary celebration, Gainesville For All is partnering with the Performing Arts Center of the University of Florida, where viewers can hear a live music performance by Michelle Mayne-Graves and her Lifeline Quartet. The music group specializes in gospel and African American spiritual songs.

“The songs they sing are coded songs. This is how black people communicated who escaped slavery. So we found it quite interesting and fun, but also educational, “said James Lawrence, executive director of Gainesville For All.

Spectators can expect speakers like Stacy Scott from the public defender’s office; Tina Certain, vice chair of the Alachua County School Committee; and Boisy Waiters, chair of the Gainesville For All Family Support team.

Ruelle Fludd, TV20’s weekend presenter, will host the night.

The event will take place on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and viewers will be able to stream it live on the University of Florida Performing Arts YouTube channel.
