Martinez’s hit of the century over all competitions for the Five Stripes came from the penalty spot and put Atlanta in sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings in the race for the Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs – at least for the time being. Missing a shot on goal, Miami saw their playoff hopes fade as they lost their third game in a row and dropped to 10th place overall.

Apart from a few half-chances for both sides, neither Atlanta nor Miami really threatened the goal in the first half. Atlanta saw a chance on track in the 36th minute, however, after Martinez sent a mishandled ricochet after Nick Marsman’s first save.

Meanwhile, Miami’s own chance for a breakthrough in the 42nd minute was exhausted by Robbie Robinson as the game began. Marsman was later challenged after a set piece in the 54th minute, and the Dutchman saved a well-placed free-kick from Ezequiel Barco.

The turning point came fifteen minutes from time when former Atlanta defender Leandro Gonzalez Pirez was called for a handball in the penalty area. With his patented stuttering step, Martinez knocked his PK past Marsman to hit his milestone and put Atlanta 1-0 ahead.

That was enough for the Five Stripes, who won their fourth game in a row on home soil.
