Last week, the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium took in over 40 sea turtle hatchlings offshore for post-rehabilitation release. Mote’s Hatchling Hospital successfully rehabilitated 33 pups, many of which were rescued from pools after becoming disoriented. Mote’s team took an additional offshore trip this week to release 10 more pups who were recovering at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Marine Life Hospital. These pups suffered from a variety of impairments, including disorientation and malnutrition. As the nesting season ends, over 300 nests remain on Sarasota beaches and an additional 100 nests remain on northern Pinellas County’s beaches. Artificial lighting and other man-made problems remain the greatest threat to remaining nests and the survival of future hatchlings. Simple changes can make a huge difference.
