Carlson’s field goal gives Raiders 31-28 OT victory over Miami | National

LAS VEGAS (AP) – The Las Vegas Raiders have had their best start since 2002.

Coach Jon Gruden isn’t ready to joke about winning.

Reigning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week Daniel Carlson’s 22-yard field goal when extra time ran out drove the Raiders to a 31-28 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. It was the second time the Raiders have had their first three games – both at home – breaking a two touchdown deficit to win in overtime. They also did the same against Baltimore in Week 1 on a Monday night.

“I don’t apologize for winning these games, no matter how we won them,” said Gruden. “If you’re 14-0 behind and get 25 unanswered points against a team like that in the NFL, something is going right.”

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr found Bryan Edwards for 34 yards before Peyton Barber put together runs of 27 and 8 yards to bring Las Vegas to the Miami 11-yard line. This ultimately led to the winning goal for Carlson, who missed an additional point in the regulation and scored two field goals in the additional frame.

Las Vegas is the first team to start 3-0 against teams that won all 10 or more games in the preseason.

Carr, who completed 26 of 43 attempts to pass for 386 yards and two touchdowns, used his talented receiving depth for the third game in a row. The eight-year veteran completed passes to nine destinations, led by Hunter Renfrow and Darren Waller, who each had five receptions. Renfrow also scored a touchdown.

With star running back Josh Jacobs out with an ankle injury, the recently signed barber led the rushing game with 111 yards and a touchdown at 23 carries.

“I think he did more than just run – we went to him as our third defense attorney … He was tough on all assignments,” said Gruden. “I don’t even know this guy that well. But I gave him a big hug and a cue ball. “

And while the Raiders offense outperformed Miami 497-330, it was their specialty teams and defenses that sparked the comeback after Miami scored the game’s first 14 points.

One game after Zay Jones punted downfield to hit the ball at the 1-yard line, cornerback Casey Hayward Jr. caught Miami receiver Jaylen Waddle passing in the end zone to safety.

“That little moment when Zay just puts an extra effort, an extra push, to get that ball in, I mean, that allows us to take two points and get us going,” said Carr. “At that moment he played a big game for us in the special teams.”

Carlson launched a 50-yard field goal to bring the Raiders within nine. Then, after a defensive stop, Las Vegas drove 95 yards to reduce Miami’s lead to 14-12. Defender Alec Ingold was rewarded by calling his number after restoring Barber’s fumble on the goal line in the previous game.

The Raiders scored on their next two possession when Carr and Renfrow met for a 12-yard strike and Barber dived across the field for a 1-yard touchdown to open a 25-14 lead.

The Dolphins weren’t finished yet, however.

After Jason Sanders of Miami made a one-score game with a 46-yard field goal in the middle of the fourth quarter, Jacoby Brissett climbed to fourth and scored a goal for a 1-yard touchdown with a: 02 typically. Brissett passed on William Fuller for the 2-point conversion, forcing the extension.

The teams exchanged extra field goals before Carlson’s winner. The Dolphins chose to kick a field goal on the fourth-and-two from the Las Vegas 32. That was the game with 2:49 remaining, but Miami never got the ball back.

Brissett, who played for the injured Tua Tagovailoa, finished 32 of 49 for 215 yards. Waddle led Miami with 12 receptions for 58 yards while Mike Gesicki took 10 passes for a team-high 86 yards.

“There was definitely a bit of a lull in the second and third quarters,” said Miami’s coach Brian Flores. “We didn’t get much out of it offensively. (Brissett) got much more comfortable as the game progressed, got in the pocket and ended up doing some big throws. In the end it wasn’t enough. We have to play better all along the line. “

Big as thieves

When linebacker Elandon Roberts shot 85 yards for a pick-six touchdown, he extended an NFL-best streak of 25 games with a takeaway for the Dolphins.

Edwards has six catches for 101 yards in regulation this season; he has four catches for 109 yards in overtime. The 109 yards Edwards receives in overtime is the most in a season for any player since at least 1991.
