11-year-old girl from Tallahassee raises more than $ 12,000 for childhood cancer charities

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – Leon County schools and people affected by childhood cancer were encouraged to wear gold all Friday.

Moore Bass Consulting agency partnered with Hang Tough in Midtown this morning to host a special event honoring children with cancer.

11-year-old Katelyn Irwin also announced today that she has raised more than $ 12,000 for cancer charities such as the Hang Tough Foundation, UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital and Trent’s Touch.

“Every single year school has a breast cancer awareness day, so I started Go Gold Day,” said Irwin. “It feels really good that people are supporting me in my work and raising $ 12,000 for three campaigns is pretty great.”

Irwin said she was inspired to start Go Gold Day based on her 11-month-old brother’s diagnosis of leukemia in 2013.
