A volleyball top 10 showdown earlier in the season gave Canterbury and Gulf Coast a measure of where they stand.
The Cougars’ momentum was too great for the Sharks as Canterbury didn’t give up a set on their home floor in a 25:19, 25:18, 25:22 win on Tuesday night.
“Among other things, we wanted to end the games,” said Canterbury coach Charlie Castillo. “That third sentence was really big for us because it was our Achilles heel, so to speak. We get up in teams early and have a little disappointment at the end of that third set and put it down. “

The Sharks couldn’t maintain momentum until the end of the third set as they managed to even draw against Canterbury at 22. From there, a couple of key Kayla Huether games got the Cougars over the top.
“I think it was something at the beginning of the game where we were excited and a little over-emotional, hyped on the game,” added Castillo. “During the time off, we just tried to get them back on and tell them, ‘Hey, it’s a process. Take one step at a time, one point at a time. Come back and do it, and the rest takes “take care of yourself.”
The Cougars will rest for two days before traveling to Orlando to play at the Nike Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday. Gulf Coast (2-1) will try to recover against Napoli on Thursday.
“We really wanted to have a really tough test for us,” said Castillo. “We really wanted to see our girls in a high pressure situation, a very visible situation that we could get tonight. We had a hell of a crowd. In the short term, to go to the Tournament of Champions, that should give” We have more confidence to compete against some of the best teams in the state and the country. “
