The April 2021 Leon County School Board’s decision to decline applications for Red Hills Academy was overturned today by the Charter School Appeal Commission.
The panel recommended approval of the new charter school and stated that there was no “substantial competent evidence” of the Leon County School Board’s (LCSB) rejection. The motion was originally rejected by 3-2 votes by the LCSB due to concerns about the school’s budget and safety.
The school’s proposal sparked discussions about charter schools that are taking resources away from the traditional public education system. Although charter schools are considered public schools, they are run by nonprofit bodies and have the autonomy to rule themselves largely without having to follow district guidelines. Red Hills Academy, when approved, will be Leon County’s sixth charter school.
Going forward, the Red Hills Academy application will be submitted to the Florida Board of Education for consideration. If the school is approved, Red Hills Academy plans to open its doors in August 2022, says Laura Joanos, chair of the Red Hills Academy Board.
Joanos said in an interview: “It will be a small school, it will be a very caring, family-oriented school and we are very happy about it!”
She commented that the school will have “a great curriculum for the kids in Leon County.” The curriculum includes a second language that is taught daily.
