Duck rescued from nets on St. Pete Pier
When the nets that the city calls a sculpture went up, animal rights activists warned against it. Now a bird got stuck and had to be rescued from the art on the St. Petersburg pier.
ST. PETERSBURG, Florida. – City crews acted quickly on Friday morning to rescue a mallard caught in the net of the hanging rope sculpture “Bending Arc” on St. Petersburg’s new pier.
Barbara Walker, bird attorney at the non-profit organization “Birds in Helping Hands”, thanked the city for the quick action.
“When you see a bird upstairs that is struggling hard and there is nothing you can do about it. Every minute feels like an hour so it was great of you to get that bucket truck there right away,” shared Walker.
There were concerns that wildlife could be trapped before the sculpture was installed. Walker was one of many who wrote letters and spoke at gatherings, urging the city to reconsider the design, which cost more than $ 1 million and was largely paid for by private money.
FOX 13 reported that the debate had come to a point where the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission conducted a study that found the sculpture would have no impact on wildlife.
Walker said she is concerned other cases have not been reported and would like more surveillance of the sculpture to make sure the incident on Friday is not a trend.
The city says this is the only case it is aware of and they are reviewing the situation to see how this happened and what can be done to prevent it from happening in the future – with the option of surveillance cameras.
