Tallahassee public utility and disc golf course wins awards

Tallahassee took home two major honors this week, one for being one of the country’s top public utilities and another for recognizing Tom Brown’s disc golf course as the best in the state.

The City of Tallahassee Utilities received the American Public Power Association’s EF Scattergood System Achievement Award. The award is linked to the city’s commitment to clean energy, customer service and mutual help.

The city has pledged to be fully renewable energy by 2050 and has already taken measures that include the operation of electric public transport and parts of its urban fleet.

The city already operates two solar parks, one of which uses part of the energy generated to supply municipal buildings. It is also in the process of developing its clean energy plan for the next year.

This includes plans to convert the entire community to renewable and clean energy by addressing the affordability of energy solutions and by creating incentives or discounts for households that use solar energy or invest in other energy efficiency measures such as weathering.

Tallahassee was one of a number of Florida utilities that stopped collecting utility fees during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. During that time, it has served more than 9,000 customers and has been working since resuming normal operations this spring to provide financial support to people living with COVID-related delinquency – either through federal funding, payment plans, or otherwise.

The separations of accounts that had been in default since February resumed earlier this year. In total, more than $ 10 million in outstanding payments was counted as the city broke customer breakup.

This year three other public utilities also received the award: Bristol Tennessee Essential Services, Kaukauna Utilities in Wisconsin and Paducah Power System in Kentucky.

Another focus of the APPA award underscores the city’s quick efforts to help each other. Teams were deployed ten times in other cities last year to help in Florida, Alabama and Louisiana after Hurricanes Laura, Marco, Sally and Delta.

“Tallahassee Utilities has really stood up to the challenges facing its customers over the past year,” said Joy Ditto, President and CEO of APPA, in a statement. The award will be presented to the city commission on July 7th. “The steps they have taken quickly to combat COVID-19 in their community have been impressive. You really deserve this honor. “

By the way: For the second time in a year, UDisc has named the Tom Brown Disc Golf Course the top in Florida as part of its efforts to win the award “The 5 Best Disc Golf Courses” in every state.

Earlier this year, disc golf magazine and phone app ranked the 24-hole course on the east side of Tallahassee 61st in the world based on player input.

Likewise, ratings and reviews from players, as well as flagged statistics on how well-maintained, challenging, and beautiful the course is, as well as advice on its layout and mix of strokes, helped determine where the course ended up in the leaderboard.

Tom Brown surpassed Florida. This was followed in sequence by courses in Clermont, Jacksonville, Tampa and Sunrise.

The course has a unique topography that attracts players interested in the challenge of playing at different altitudes. The game is similar to regular golf in that players try to toss a hard frisbee-like disc into a raised basket with as few strokes as possible.
