Tyler Herro, two Miami Heat coaches, provide assistance after the 12-story condo building collapses

MIAMI – Heat guard Tyler Herro was training with assistant coaches Chris Quinn and Eric Glass Thursday morning when they were told there was a more pressing need.

It wasn’t long before Herro, Quinn, and Glass left the team’s arena for the short drive north to Surfside, Florida, where a 12-story beachfront condo building collapsed at around 1:30 a.m. At least three people were killed, nearly a hundred were missing, and rescue teams searched the rubble in hopes of finding someone alive.

The Heat trio helped load a truck with water, food, and other essentials.

The Heat wasn’t the only Miami-based professional sports franchise to offer help. The Miami Marlins announced that they have dispatched three vans of food and water for rescue workers and essential items for residents displaced by the collapse.

“This is 12 miles from our arena,” said Steve Stowe, vice president of Heat and executive director of the charitable fund. “We heard about it and our immediate reaction was that we had to find a way to help.”

Herro also turned to the frontline workers, thanking them for their heroism and efforts.

The Heat provided further assistance through corporate partners such as World Central Kitchen and Direct Relief. Food trucks were secured to provide hot meals and packing boxes to rescuers and other local personnel, and the team worked to find shelter for those displaced by the collapse.

“These are the moments when a community needs to come together, stand up and help,” said Stowe.
