TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – The Tallahassee Police Youth Advisory Board will travel to Cascades Park for their pre-summer youth summit on Friday.
“It’s for the youth, from the youth,” said Alicia Turner, communications director for the Tallahassee Police Department.
Tallahassee Police say it is an opportunity for children to be heard when it comes to stopping violence.
A new report from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement counts a total of 310 juvenile arrests from the Tallahassee Police Department and 128 more from the Leon County Sheriff’s office. Both in 2020.
The Tallahassee Urban League offers a variety of youth delinquency prevention programs. President and CEO Curtis Taylor said the community needs to talk about it because “The police can’t be everywhere. When these bullets fly, they have no names.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention listed guns as the leading cause of child death in the United States in 2019. Tallahassee Moms Demand Action activist Michaela Denny says gun safety should be part of the conversation as well.
“We want children to be safe in their homes and schools, and locking guns in or restricting access to guns is an important aspect,” Denny said.
The Youth Citizens’ Council will be holding discussions on these and other topics from June 25th at 6 p.m.
