TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – Last year, four Tallahassee Babe Ruth alumni and former players were awarded a $ 500 scholarship. This year, in the second year, the organization increased the stakes. Almost twice as many players were honored and twice as much money was given.
Seven college athletes received $ 1,000 from Tallahassee Leon Babe Ruth Baseball Thursday night. Tyler Gerteisen, Blake Dincman, Lawrence Steed, Caden Slappey, Joshua Linville, Broedy Poppell and Carter Nash were this year’s winners.
All submitted an essay and the board made its decision based on grades, volunteer hours, and lessons from life with Babe Ruth. All seven were impressive and show how great Tallahassee baseball is.
“If you can commit to a program and show that you make a little more money and we can give something back, that’s what we want to do,” said board member Garrett Blanton. “It’s been an honor to be able to do this for the past two years and I hope it will continue for a long time.”
“It was very difficult to narrow it down to what we could afford this year,” added Andrew Brady. “We hope that the golf tournament and other fundraising campaigns will continue to grow and that we can offer more players more opportunities and, hopefully, more money.”
