CAPE CORAL, Florida – Two Cape Coral parents face child neglect charges after their living conditions are found unsuitable for children, according to the Cape Coral Police Department.
Karleigh Anne Awis and Andrew David Awis are each charged with sevenfold child neglect.
The Cape Coral police described the living conditions in the couple’s house as deplorable and completely unsuitable for children. Records show the two were released from prison on Monday afternoon.
Neighbors were worried about the children living there.
“It breaks my heart,” said neighbor Ann Kotz. “You have seven children and, as I understand it, another one on the way. I don’t understand how you can live in this little four-room house with so many children. “
Kotz remembered intervening once to prevent several unattended toddlers in diapers from sprinting into a nearby canal.
“There are alligators and snakes and everything else,” said Kotz. “I certainly wouldn’t let my kids walk down the street in their diapers.”
Several neighbors said the few times they saw the Awis interact with their children was daunting.
“They scream and yell at the children. Some of the language is pretty unsavory, ”said Kotz. “I wouldn’t talk to an adult like that, let alone a very young child.”
Cape Coral Police are expected to release more details about their arrests shortly. Rely on NBC2 to provide you with the latest information as it becomes available.
