TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Cap News Services) – Tens of thousands of unemployed Floridians will lose an additional $ 300 per week in benefits after Friday.
The state has made the decision to prematurely suspend payments, which could have lasted until September, because many believe the checks are keeping people away from work.
At the same time, companies are struggling to fill more than half a million jobs.
“34 percent of small business owners report that they have raised wages in the past three months,” said Bill Herrle of the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
The association informed us that 57 percent of its members have not been able to find a job in the past three months.
“We have always asked ourselves this question when it comes to job vacancies. That is a 40-year record and it continues to rise, ”said Herrle.
More than 2.3 million Floridians were eligible for the additional $ 300 per week pandemic payments, which end on Saturday.
“Yes, there is a labor shortage, but to blame the unemployed alone for it is wrong,” said State Representative Anna Eskamani.
Eskamani’s office was ground zero to help the unemployed navigate benefits.
“Some are still on leave, some have childcare costs, others are too old to be on their feet all day in the sense that they are unable to do so. They need a job that suits their skills and comfort, ”Eskamani said.
So far, the idea that people aren’t working because they can stay home more is unproven, but the picture could be clearer after the $ 300-a-week checks end on Saturday.
Since the end of May, unemployed people in Florida have also had to actively look for work in order to receive benefits.
A person needs to make three or five contacts a week, depending on the size of the county in which they live.
