TALLAHASSEE, Florida (WTXL) – Highlighting African American travel in Florida and how historians across the state can tell these stories. That drew people from all over the state to the Journey to Emancipation Statewide Conference.
It is hosted by Tallahassee’s black history museum, the John G. Riley House.
The focus is on the day the Declaration of Emancipation was signed, the day slaves were freed in Florida, and the day the 13th Amendment to the Prohibition of Slavery was passed.
“We want them to take away a more enlightened horizon of the past,” said County Commissioner Bill Proctor. “We want you to have the conviction and commitment to tell the truth, to tell the stories, to explain the past.”
The conference will continue on Monday and conclude on Tuesday. Tickets are sold out.
