St. Petersburg’s Southside Fresh Market
When the Southside Fresh Market opened earlier this year, its purpose was to feed the people of the food deserts of South St. Pete, providing them not only with nutritious and healthy foods, but also with the knowledge for healthier lifestyles.
Last month the market announced it was going to close and said, “After many attempts, we have not been able to renew our event permit so that the Southside Fresh Market can continue to operate in its current location,” the post said.
Market manager Judith Turner told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that the market was unable to renew a month-long event permit because the market, as told by the City of St. Petersburg Zoning, “was not the intended use for the property.” .
“We knew it was coming, so we had planned to move anyway,” said Turner.
Location details
The Southside Fresh Market will open on Saturday, December 11th, 10 am-3pm at 3415 21st Ave. S officially reopened near the intersection of US Highway 19 and S 21st Avenue. Customers are welcome to place online orders through Southside’s Facebook page or website.
“Between the hustle and bustle, people start to know who we are. They want to support positive action, ”Michael“ Spirit Mike ”Chaney, a member of the Southside Fresh Market Advisory Committee, told Bay News 9.
One of the plans for the market is the return of the Retail Ready Program, which is helping sellers learn how to get products on the shelf ready for store. Applicants learn the ropes from food safety compliance to running a business and product development. Applications are still possible and the program will start in January.
“My hope is to have a place as a hub that offers everything you need in agriculture. Lots of people are scared because no one helps them, ”said Chaney.
Turner bluntly said her hope for the market is to get money into people’s pockets. She said it was a way of empowering people to solve their own problems from within.
“I want people to be self-sufficient and to be a meeting place. The best part is meeting people and hearing their stories, ”she said.
