The Junior League of Gainesville is hosting the 31st Miracle on Main Street event

The Junior League of Gainesville is hosting the 31st Miracle on Main Street event

The Junior League of Gainesville is transforming into a store at Gainesville’s Trinity United Methodist Church on Saturday, all free for their annual Miracle on Main Street event.

Families with vouchers provided by a community agency can collect items such as toys, diapers and wipes, used clothing, and supplies. The members of the Junior League act as personal shoppers and support the families throughout the shopping experience.

Last year, the Junior League hosted the annual event in a drive-through format rather than a personal experience. Undeterred by changes, they looked after 740 children from 240 families and provided 2,346 toys, 586 items of clothing, 240 storage bags and 187 baby items.

This year, they will keep the 2020 drive-through format. With fewer restrictions on social distancing, there will be a used clothing area where attendees can shop in person for free.

The Gainesville Junior League was founded in 1935 and is a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc., a nonprofit organization devoted to community service and women’s empowerment. The organization strives to improve Alachua County through civic leadership, approaching food insecurity, and hosting charity events.

In her third year as co-chair of the Miracle on Main Street Committee, Becca Roberts is rewarded with yet another opportunity to make the event happen and help hundreds of local families over the holidays.

“Although the format is constantly changing due to security and space precautions, the league is proud to host this event on the 31st

Donations are accepted until December 3rd at 5:00 p.m. at 5346 SW 91st Terrace in Gainesville.

Finally, to collect last-minute contributions, the Thomas Group is holding a Christmas party, Light The Village, on December 3rd from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In addition to Christmas music and festive cocktails, the gingerbread house will have areas where children can create their Christmas lists, drink hot chocolate and take photos with Santa Claus.

People can also help by buying from a selection of items on the Junior League of Gainesville promotional wish list.

Miracle on Main Street is exclusively occupied by members of the Junior League. Lacie Klann, an active member of JLG for seven years and currently president of the organization, said Miracle of Main Street would not have been possible without the 300+ women volunteers in the past 30 years.

“I’m incredibly proud of the women of the Gainesville Junior League who have gathered again during this pandemic to ensure the needs of local families here in our community are met,” Klann said.
