Texas Southern beats No. 20 Florida at Gainesville for a shocking first win of the season

College basketball week starts with a shocking street disorder.

The Tigers dominated total domination for the final 31 minutes of the game after the Gators were six points ahead at the start of the first half. Texas Southern shot 54.4% out of the field, compared to 38.2% for Florida. And the Tigers doubled the gators on the boards, winning the rebound division 46-23.

Texas Southern was an underdog with 23.5 points, entering the game at No. 273 on the NET.

Texas Southern, number 273 on the NET and worse on other metrics, just took to the streets, beating Florida by 15 POINTS as a 23.5-point underdog. It’s her first win of the season. They are the first SWAC team to beat an SEC ranked team (since 1936), with the SEC reaching 51-0 in such games.

And at 0-7, Texas Southern had the worst record ever beaten by an AP ranked team since 1980.

0-7 Texas Southern defeated Florida in 20th place, 69-54. Since 1980, the worst record for a team to beat an AP ranked opponent has been 0-3 (Louisville versus Maryland on December 13, 1980). pic.twitter.com/CxrA72b3oN

Texas Southern has never been as bad as a typical 0-7 team. They entered the game with KenPom’s # 5 on schedule strength after playing that schedule: in Oregon, in Saint Mary’s, in Washington, in the Air Force, in NC State, in BYU, in Louisiana Tech. And they lost under double digits in four of those games while losing more than 20 in just one time. So, with the average schedule, they would probably have won a few games by now.

Still, the number 20 in the country shouldn’t let a team like this into their house and dominate. It is a very dire loss to Florida that will serve as a gross blemish on their résumé in March.

And on the other hand, it’s a significant win for Johnny Jones and the Texas Southern program.
