Miami (OH) plays in the makeshift “Frisco Football Classic” against North Texas

Miami (OH) plays in the makeshift "Frisco Football Classic" against North Texas

One team had to be disappointed when the 2021 Bowl Games were revealed. This season, 83 teams qualified for bowl eligibility. However, only 82 places were available.

In a shocking announcement, a makeshift bowl game was introduced into the postseason landscape of college football to please all bowl-eligible teams. Earlier this week, it was speculated that an unnamed bowl game was happening somewhere in the state of Texas.

Action Network’s Brett McMurphy cleared the goal, matchup, and working name of the latest bowl game on Sunday afternoon. Referred to as the “Frisco Football Classic”, the Miami RedHawks and North Texas Mean Green will face one another in Frisco, TX in a match between 6-6 opponents.

Miami, OH (6-6, 5-3 MAC) is playing its first bowl game since 2019 when it won the MAC championship. Losing two consecutive post-season matchups, the RedHawks are aiming for their first bowl win in Frisco since defeating Middle Tennessee in the 2010 GoDaddy.com Bowl. Miami will also have the opportunity to snap up its 31-game non-conference running streak against FBS opponents – the RedHawks’ last FBS win outside of the MAC was against the Army in 2011.

North Texas (6-6, 5-3 C-USA) looked like a 6-1 start for a losing season. The Mean Green ended the year as one of the hottest teams in college football, however. North Texas has won each of its last five games, including knocking over a UTSA team to secure bowl eligibility. The team aims to end its four-game losing streak in bowl matches in Frisco. North Texas last suspended hardware post-season in 2013 by defeating UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

McMurphy said the Frisco Football Classic is expected to air on an ESPN network, but the timing of the game has yet to be determined. The matchup begins on December 23rd at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, TX – a suburb about 30 miles north of Dallas. The Frisco Football Classic is not to be confused with the annual Frisco Bowl, which is scheduled for December 21st with UTSA and San Diego State.

The Frisco Football Classic presents the first ever game between Miami and North Texas.
