The Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg took the initiative to help a cause they believed in and took to the pitch dog in hand instead of the usual children’s mascots. The club was playing against FC Rostov on Friday night when the whole thing emerged.

The entire starting eleven of the club went with dogs in hand ready for adoption. They supported a campaign called “Dogs Are Better At Home” because they wanted more dogs to be adopted in Russia. The nation celebrated World Animal Day on November 30th, and Zenit St. Petersburg wanted to draw more attention to the matter.

The response on social media has been great and everyone has something good to say about the idea of the club. The English account of the Russian club thanked everyone for the reply and added a caption to the tweet with a link to local dog shelters.
“Now we are looking for a home for these good boys and girls. The aim of the project is to make the public aware of the responsibility and care involved in keeping a pet and to raise funds for local dog shelters, ”the club account tweeted.

FC Rostov scored two early goals in the game and took an early lead. Zenit came back, however, and Claudinho scored two goals for the club to help put his club in a draw and open a five-point lead at the top of the table.

Next week, Zenit St. Petersburg will face Chelsea, the current defending champions of the UEFA Champions League, in the final game of the group stage. The result of the game is irrelevant for the Russian club, as they have already qualified for the Europa League and can no longer qualify for the knockout phase of the UCL.

However, facing Chelsea is another great opportunity for more people to watch and support their cause. The English club have yet to beat Zenit to secure their top spot in their group.
