MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – Take all of the passers-by in NFL history who tried 75 or more throws in a month, and no one was ever more accurate than Peyton Manning for Indianapolis in December 2008.
The # 2 name on this list might come as a surprise.
Tua Tagovailoa can’t miss right now and the Miami Dolphins suddenly can’t lose anymore. He completed 80.5% of his throws in November, the second best month in NFL history for accuracy, and the Dolphins (5-7) are aiming for their fifth straight win on Sunday when they host the New York Giants ( 4.) Are -7), who has to do without starting quarterback Daniel Jones due to a neck injury.
“It always feels good to win, but what we can’t do as a team is to be happy with last week’s win,” said Tagovailoa. “This is the soccer game we play. You enjoy it for that day, tonight, coming to work, learning from your mistakes, and then you really move forward. I would say if you can’t do that, it’s hard for you to sum up good days. “
Rib and finger injuries that derailed him earlier this season are now essentially in the rearview mirror. He was 62 for 77 in November, meaning he was just one degree away from hitting Manning’s best-month record for accuracy.
“You see Tua’s progress and how consistent he has been towards his degree,” said Giants trainer Joe Judge. “He does a really good job of getting the ball moving, staying in front of the sticks, sitting outside with lots of possession and helping this team to leave.”
The Giants aren’t sure who’s going to let them go this week.
Jones was dislocated on Friday with a dislocated neck for not being given permission to contact. Veteran Mike Glennon will be lining up and will be assisted by Jake Fromm, who was fired from the Buffalo training team earlier this week.
Jones was injured in a 13-7 win over the Eagles on Sunday, but he never missed a snap. He’s only trained to a limited extent this week.
The Dolphins are trying to become the fourth team in NFL history to climb from 1-7 to 6-7. It’s a path the Giants almost took last year when they went from 1-7 to 5-7 in Judge’s first season.
Dolphins trainer Brian Flores has had close ties with Judge and a few other Giants trainers for years, largely due to their time together as assistants in New England. And Flores credits Judge for helping him become a better coach.
“Joe is someone I definitely learned from, and he has a PhD in education so he knows how to teach,” said Flores. “I don’t think people know. But at the end of the day coaching teaches and I’ve learned some teaching methods from him. “
SO MUCH NEW
This marks the start of the Dolphins, who play three consecutive games against “new” teams – the Giants, followed by a December 19th matchup with the New York Jets and a December 27th game with the New Orleans Saints. If you add New England, the Dolphins will play six games against ‘new’ teams this season. In the current NFL era, no team has ever done that in a regular season.
GIANT OPENING
Last week was the debut of Freddie Kitchens calling the offensive games for the Giants. He got the job when Joe Judge fired coordinator Jason Garrett after a dismal performance against Tampa Bay. RB Saquon Barkley got 17 hits but only made 53 yards, and 32 of those yards came with a carry. It was very methodical; 30 passes, 27 rushes for the Giants last week.
RYAN RETURN
Nickel-back Darnay Holmes (ribs) and starting cornerback Adoree Jackson (quad) were both injured in beating Philadelphia. That means Patrick Graham, the Giants defense coordinator, has to mix things up. He will be getting help returning from DB Logan Ryan, who missed two games after testing positive for COVID-19.
RIGHT AT HOME
Expect some blue in the crowd along with all that water on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium. No matter what sport, no matter what team, when a New York team – especially the Giants, Knicks, Rangers, Mets or Yankees – plays in South Florida, the visiting team always seems to have vocal support in the stands.
KICK GAME
The Giants are one of five teams that are still at the start this week and have not yet missed an additional point this season, 14 for 14. The others: Atlanta (20 for 20), Baltimore (22 for 22), Philadelphia (30 for 30) and buffalo (34 for 34).
