London hotspot Sexy Fish is coming soon to NYC and Miami

London hotspot Sexy Fish is coming soon to NYC and Miami

London-based Sexy Fish hops over The Pond and brings its Asian fusion seafood – along with a mega-Buck collection of marine art by Damiean Hirst and Frank Gehry – to dining in Miami and New York.

British restaurateur Richard Caring, 73, is currently looking for places to start a Sexy Fish – a celebrity hotspot for Kate Moss, Lindsay Lohan, and Hugh Jackman – in Manhattan. He’s looking for possible spaces on Billionaires’ Row as well as downtown and the Upper East Side, where British David and Simon Reuben recently bought the Surrey Hotel.

“I’ve heard that downtown New Yorkers will go uptown, but that the Upper East Siders rarely leave their neighborhood,” Caring said.

But his 40-year-old Brazilian-born wife Patricia Mondinni, with whom he has three children, is looking forward to spending time in Miami first, he said.

As such, Sexy Fish opens in Miami’s trendy Brickell neighborhood in October. Caring commissioned Hirst and Gehry, the legendary 92-year-old star architect, with new works of art and sculptures worth $ 20 million for the restaurant on 1001 South Miami Ave.

But that doesn’t stop Caring from looking for a second flagship location in Gotham that will also showcase its own unique art collection, Caring tells Side Dish.

“It will be an investment of at least the same size. Great art retains its value. That’s why we’re doing it, ”he said.

Caring is also the majority shareholder in the Soho House Group. On Monday, Reuters reported that Soho House was planning an IPO in New York to raise $ 100 million on the New York Stock Exchange.

Caring’s Caprice Holdings also owns Annabel’s, London’s hip private club, and Ivy Collection. In 2019, Caring sold a 25 percent stake in its company for around $ 277 million to ex-Qatar Prime Minister Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.

Now Caring is planting a portion of that proceeds into a stunning art collection to decorate Sexy Fish’s upcoming Miami location. No – it won’t host any of Hirst’s famous great white sharks in formaldehyde. However, there will be a 7 meter high Hirst octopus and a huge bronze wall relief with a length of 28 meters called “Sea Life” and a coral urinal. Frank Gehry has since created fish sculptures “that will float in the air” that hang from a gold ceiling, Caring said, along with 26 fish lamps.

In addition, food lovers will be visually impressed by a 21-foot aquarium filled with live corals and tropical fish. Outside there is a garden and a koi pond.

“The garden is something very special. It’s going to be nice, but not Disney-style because it’s real, “he said.

It’s all in a 10,000 square meter space with 242 seats inside and 58 outside, designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, who also furnished Sexy Fish London. Both rooms are designed like a decadent brasserie from the lost city of Atlantis, covered in scale-like mosaic tiles, dotted with raspberry-colored leather tables and benches – and really expensive works of art by Hirst and Gehry.

“The wow factor is huge. We can have our own show, ”said Caring. “I love art. It’s more fun and a rarity in today’s world.”

Sexy Fish first opened in London’s Mayfair neighborhood in 2015. If the restaurants pick up, he’ll be ready to open 10 in the U.S., Caring said.
