San Francisco Giants could have a building block in Sammy Long
Anthony Bender wasn’t a commitment that would make headlines for even the most die-hard Miami Marlins fans. He was a former selection in the 20th round in the 2016 MLB draft, which has already been published by two organizations. At the age of 26 to kick off the 2021 season, Bender would likely play in the top minor and potentially take a look at the majors if he performs well.
Instead, he never threw the minors in for the marlins. In fact, since his debut on May 5th, he’s had one of the most impressive starts of any pitching career to begin with.
With 1.2 goalless innings today, RHP Anthony Bender now has the seventh longest streak without a deserved run starting his career in MLB history with 19.1 innings. Brad Ziegler (OAK) holds the record with 38.0 IP without allowing a deserved run from May 31 to August 12, 2008.

Anthony Bender could be a long-term asset to Miami Marlin’s bullpen
As the Marlins strive to build a sustainable competitor, it will be important to find parts for the bullpen. Their starting rotation already has the potential to be one of the best in the league, with a strong core and several fascinating pitching prospects waiting in the wings. While it is possible for some of these arms to end in relief, the bullpen needs to be the focus.
Bender shows that he can be part of this future. In his 19.1 innings, he has only allowed two undeserved runs out of eight hits and five walks, cutting 23 batters. Opponents hit him with a .129 / .214 / .129 clip, showing that there is more than luck involved.
Despite being a right-handed pitcher, Bender was effective against thugs from both sides of the plate. Lefties only produce one .182 / .250 / .182 batting line in their 24 record appearances against him as he shows the potential to be a weapon regardless of the hitter.
Should Bender continue to dominate the Marlins bullpen, it would be no surprise that he gets more work with high leverage. He’s already won three holds this year, and with the Marlins looking for a near future, Bender might be considered for such a role.
The Miami Marlins had to find parts for their bullpen to build around. Anthony Bender could be one of those arms.
