No Southwest Florida golfer qualifies for the US Open

Derek Lamely hits the ball out of the bunker during the 59th annual Yuengling Open at Fort Myers Country Club on Sunday, March 14, 2021.

While some were running, no golfer from Southwest Florida survived the qualifying stages for the US Open on Monday.

Golf’s longest day, as it is known, lasted more than a day, with the qualifier in Columbus, Ohio ending on Tuesday after a 3-hour rain delay on Monday.

Former FGCU golfer Derek Lamely was 2 under with two holes to play and had a slim chance of getting through. He was tied at number 41 – the USGA site had its score wrong at 3 under Monday night – and decided to back off.

40-year-old Lamely, a three-time winner of the Yuengling Open at Fort Myers and a winner of the PGA Tour, was 3 in the last nine of his second round but bogeyed No. 11 after running into a water hazard Bogeyed No. 12, to even fall behind. He made birdie numbers 14 and 15, then pard number 16.

In the meantime, Connor Arendell made it through qualifying to the US Open 2019 and did it again on Monday.

Arendell, a graduate of Mariner High, shot a 71-72 / 143 in 36-hole qualifying at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, but fell short.

There were 71 players for just four places in Woodmont, and Arendell took 11th place. He was 4 under for the day through No. 13 of his first round, but bogeyed No. 14, 17, and 18 to score a 71. In the second round he was 2 under through eight holes, but bogeyed # 9 and 10 and 12 before birdieing # 16.

In 2019, Arendell shot 77:73 at Pebble Beach after qualifying and missed the cut by six strokes.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there was no qualification for the Open 2020.

Cape Coral-born Connor Arendell, who was shown here by winning the Yuengling Open at the Fort Myers Country Club in 2020, only just missed the section qualification for the US Open on Monday. Arendell, who made it to the US Open in the final year of qualifying in 2019, finished 11th at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. The first four advanced on Torrey Pines.

FGCU’s Van Holmgren was the next Southwest Florida golfer to attempt to qualify for the Open, which will take place June 17-20 at Torrey Pines, San Diego.

Holmgren, who won the ASUN singles title that year and qualified for the NCAA Regionals, shot 73-74 / 147 at The Bear’s Club in Jupiter, finishing 17th out of 78 players. The top six qualified, led by Patrick Rodgers, who shot 7-under 137.

Also in The Bear’s Club, The Club scored 77-79 / 156 in Renaissance’s John Lento and reached 52nd place. Matthew Paradis, who like Holmgren and Lento qualified from the Bear’s Paw Country Club in Naples last month, shot 82-79 / 161 and was tied in 59th place. Paradis had won a playoff against Naples’ Ryan Celano and Jake Marriott at Bear’s Paw for last place.

Max Theodorakis, who also qualified at Bear’s Paw, shot 70-76 / 146 and finished 24th in the section qualification in Purchase, New York.

Fort Myers PGA Tour player George McNeill made no attempt to qualify this year.

The 2021 Yuengling Open champion Rick Lamb of Nashville made it all the way through, grabbing the fourth playoff hole to finish fifth and final in Atlanta. Lamb, who won the Yuengling at Fort Myers Country Club in March, shot 8-under 136 and then survived a three-way playoff.

Fernando Barco, who won the Terra Cotta Invitational at the Naples National Golf Club in 2018, made it through the qualification in Dallas on May 24th. He won a 10-way playoff for 10th and last place.
