Security guards work extra days to keep up with vacation travel at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)

FORT MYERS, Florida – Additional security arrangements at Southwest Florida International Airport do not appear to be bothering travelers this holiday season.

But all good things come at a price, and as of December 19, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in southwest Florida requires its employees to work six days a week.

A spokesman for the TSA tells us that employees have to work for three weeks on the extra shift, which ends on January 8, 2022.

The news of the TSA doubling had worried an employee that he would not be paid his overtime rate for the extra day.

So Fox 4 reached out to the TSA, who informed us that all employees who work an extra day will receive their normal overtime rate.

For passengers, the additional security means that more checkpoint lanes are opened in order to shorten waiting times.

When Fox 4 told people about the changes at RSW, there seemed to be a universal reaction.

“I feel a lot happier because I’m more secure. I feel a lot safer at the airport,” said one person.

“It makes me feel safer. I don’t mind a little more time and a little more effort,” said another traveler.

If you were wondering if this is a common occurrence, a TSA employee told Fox 4 that this is the first time they have done something like this since it was founded in 2012.
