Suspect accused of forging documents to get a driver’s license in north Naples

Forged documents helped a man become a fake Floridian with a real driver’s license in southwest Florida. It is not the first time that something like this has happened in the region or at the same DMV.

Florida Highway Patrol’s Omaid Sultani, 23, was arrested Monday after investigators said he tried to get two Florida ID cards from DMV on Orange Blossom Drive in north Naples.

Investigators say Sultani is charged, among other things, with using Collier County addresses to establish Florida residence – all in the same DMV in northern Naples.

Investigators arrested three people in April for using fake addresses and documents to obtain licenses. Security experts say it could raise a red flag for the federal government to investigate the case.

“I would be extremely upset, extremely,” said Tommy Piber.

Nobody wants their address to be used in fake documents for criminals to create fraudulent driver’s licenses.

“Seems like it’s hard,” said Piber. “They require all of this evidence to get a driver’s license.”

Rich Kolko, WINK News Safety & Security Specialist, says it is happening.

“It’s worrying. It’s a tactic that people used in the past, ”said Kolko. “People have only used fake driver’s licenses for benefits, perhaps to bring people into the country illegally or to attend schools

According to the arrest report, Sultani received a license from the DMV on orange blossom in December 2020. He showed insurance and banking documents with an address in the Milano Lakes community to prove his residence.

Five months later, Sultani was caught obtaining another license, and that’s when the MPs learned that the address was not his.

“It is likely that the FBI will want to take a look,” said Kolko.

Kolko says we’ve seen what getting fake licenses can do too.

“At the end of the day, what happened in 2001 when many terrorists attacked the United States on September 11th, they did exactly the same thing,” said Kolko. “Went and got someone’s fake driver’s license, developed fake papers.”

The last permanent address on the arrest report for Sultani was an apartment complex in Manassas, Virginia. He was born in Afghanistan.

According to the arrest report, Sultani swore that all information he provided was true and correct. Because this was not the case, he is charged with perjury and fraud.

Sultani remains in custody in Collier County Jail.
