What a potential Ketel Marte deal would look like

A recent report by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal made an interesting note that the Miami Marlins had previously expressed an interest in a deal with Arizona Diamondbacks star midfielder Ketel Marte.

Now the two teams obviously won’t be able to participate in trade talks during the MLB lockdown, but it’s clear the Marlins have an interest in trading for Marte, a move that makes 100% sense for Miami and for the club in the Off-season would cause a massive stir. What would a potential trade for Marte look like when the interest and fit are clear?

What would a Miami Marlin trade for Ketel Marte look like?

First off, while the Marlins have an interest in trading for the star midfielder, it is currently unknown if Arizona would consider trading Marte. However, if the 28-year-old was available, the Marlins will be among the teams that have what it takes to close a deal.

As expected for a Marte-caliber player with several years of team control remaining, it would obviously take a massive return for the Diamondbacks to even consider a trade, a return that would likely span multiple big league players.

The 28-year-old switch hitter will enter his eighth big league season in 2022 and will end a 2021 season in which Marte cut .318 / .377 / .532 in 90 games with Arizona. As a one-time All-Star (2019), Marte can score for both average and strength and play defensively either in midfield or on the second base.

As a starting point for a potential deal, the Marlins would likely have to start with one of Pablo Lopez or Eliezer Hernandez, both of whom are seasoned big league starters with perennial control.

In addition to either of those two, Miami would likely have to ditch one of its top 5 prospects, a group that has potential options like RHP Edward Cabrera (2nd place), RHP Max Meyer (3rd place), or OF. includes JJ Bleday (No. 5).

Should a potential deal come off, Marte would likely step in left and right as Miami’s everyday midfielder with Jesus Sanchez and recently signed Avisail Garcia. Because of this, a Marte deal would likely be made with potential outfield / positional players outside of Miami’s top 10, such as SS Nasim Nunez (No. 13), OF Peyton Burdick (No. 14), OF Victor Mesa Jr (No. . 17) or OF / 1B Jerar Encarnacion (No. 24) as well as possibly another potential prospect of a lower level or more.

While a potential deal could obviously look different from the one listed previously, one thing is clear – if the Miami Marlins were to trade Marte this off-season, it would in return require a massive package to Arizona to close a deal.
