Tallahassee and much of the region will be exposed to “dangerously hot temperatures” as the National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting heat indices of at least 108 degrees from Thursday.
The appalling “palpable” temperature is a combination of heat and humidity that, according to a NWS warming recommendation for Big Bend, will last all weekend.
The index also resulted in excessive heat monitoring issued for temperatures above 113 degrees for the Florida Panhandle Friday. It can be extended to Saturday.

Thursday’s temperature is expected to hit 94 degrees, which is not uncommon, according to Eric Bunker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The “tangible” temperature will remain between 110 and 113 degrees because of the high dew point, he added.
However, the predictions for Friday and Saturday are an anomaly. Temperatures are expected to reach 97 degrees while the dew point stays in the high 70s, making it feel like it’s between 113 and 115 degrees outside, Bunker said.
“People have to be careful and limit their time in the sun, especially in the afternoon,” he said. “Such high heat indices are dangerous.”
Here’s why: Humans lower their body temperature by sweating. Put simply, when the heat and humidity are too high, there is no way you can cool off by sweating.

Bunker suggested that people drink plenty of water, wear light clothing, take breaks in an air-conditioned place, and wait until morning or evening with pets. He said heat strokes and illness are possible if the heat is as high as forecast for the weekend.
“Please just be careful,” he said. “Don’t underestimate the heat.”
