MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard made a limited return to training Saturday, saying he hopes to resolve his contract dispute in order to stay on the team.
Howard took to Instagram Tuesday night to request a trade over his displeasure with his contract. Howard was an all-pro selection in 2020 after leading the NFL with 10 interceptions.
Howard, who was selected in the second round in 2016, signed a five-year, $ 75 million contract extension in May 2019 that lasts four years. The deal made him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback at the time, but he’s fallen to sixth place since then.
One of the players who overtook him: teammate Byron Jones, whom the Dolphins signed to a five-year $ 82.1 million deal in the 2020 off-season.
“Sure, I hope it gets better,” said Howard. “It’s a process. I hear this and hear that, but nothing is done right now. At the moment I’m just out here every day to support the team and work out here. “
Howard, who skipped the entire offseason program and fined himself more than $ 90,000 for missing the mandatory minicamp, said he will see if he would be willing to attend preseason games in due course.
