The number of visitors did not decrease during the pandemic, she said. In 2019, the park was visited by 120,000 cars and that number was roughly the same in 2020, Lynch said. So far, 2021 is well on the way to seeing a record number of visitors and fewer events due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The park had no rowing, kayaking, or many other competitive events last spring, but normal operations for these sports are slated to resume in the spring of 2022 unless COVID-19 conditions worsen significantly. The park also plans to host competitive events this fall, including wakeboarding and open water swimming, Lynch said.

The city of Gainesville is funding a renovation of the park’s boathouse through hotel and motel taxes in 2022, Lynch said. And the Lake Lanier Olympic Park Foundation is in the middle of a capital campaign for additional projects, including a pavilion for events in the park’s plaza, Lynch said.
