Cuban protests in southwest Florida continue

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA – Tuesday marks the third day of Cuban protests against the island nation and in southwest Florida.

“It’s very emotional. I’ve been very stressed for three days, ”said Gloria Jordan.

This struggle for freedom has been a struggle of the Cubans for 60 years. For this reason, Isbell Rodriguez fled Cuba on a raft 13 years ago.

“The community is tired, there is no medicine, no food,” said Rodriguez

Many have asked: “Why are these protests starting now?” Some Cubans believe that the shutdown of the internet started the unrest.

“They shut down the internet so the community couldn’t talk to each other,” said Rodriguez.

Jordan said Cubans are dying of starvation, COVID and poor health care.

“You get nothing, people protesting and what do you get? They’re killing people right now, ”Jordan said.

Experts said these riots could drive Cubans at sea. FGCU Hispanic Studies Dr. Francesco Masala said that people will do what they have to do to survive.

“I think there will be a new wave of Cubans who want to leave the country. I wouldn’t be surprised if people were willing to come on rafts because of the short distance from Cuba to the US, ”said Dr. Masala.

Cubans in southwest Florida say they will keep singing until something changes. Many are demanding that the US government intervene.

“I don’t want a war,” said Jordan. Cubans want freedom, their human rights and what they need to survive.

On Tuesday evening, protesters blocked traffic on I-75 by sitting and standing on the freeway. They moved onto the freeway from downtown Fort Myers with their protest.
