TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Along with the excitement and intrigue that came with the ACC kickoff last week, came the unfortunate and sobering news of legendary coach Bobby Bowden’s battle with pancreatic cancer.
A surge of support surrounded Bowden von Charlotte: Mark Richt, Mack Brown, EJ Manuel and Dabo Swinney all expressed their good wishes and spoke at length about how much Bowden means to them and the fabric of college football.
Current FSU head coach Mike Norvell may be relatively new to Tallahassee, but he too understands the standard Bowden set and what it means to be a Seminole.
Bowden is a giant in college football. In over three decades at the top, he has brought the Seminoles from almost irrelevant to national importance and left his mark as one of the best that has ever made it.
Now in Tallahassee is Norvell, who looks back on the Bowden days with admiration and understands exactly what these teams are all about.
“Dedication. Relationships. The way they played together on offensive, defensive and special teams. They played for something bigger than themselves,” Norvell said. “There was a standard of how they showed up every day and tried to be the best Version of who they were and what they represented. “
Norvell knows it goes much deeper: he talks about what Bowden achieved outside of the field and his significant influence on shaping young men, and longs to shape this current Seminole program after the legend that came before him was standing.
“It’s not just about who they were and what number they wore, but also about the impact they made. That was the standard and that was what Coach Bowden and her staff expected. It all came down to the work and the relationships. That’s why they were able to play at the level they achieved. We are working on that here with our program. “
