TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The FDA’s warning of a new rare side effect related to the Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is affecting vaccination sites due to growing concerns.

When looking for a local vaccination site, many people who were vaccinated said that J&J was never their first choice.

“I was really uncomfortable with all of the history and research and cases that have come on against Johnson and Johnson,” said resident Felicia Sparks.

Sparks said the effectiveness of J&J also distracted them from the brand, leading them to choose Pfizer. Another mother on campus, Michelle Spencer, said she saw a number of people get sick and some die of COVID-19. She knew she wanted to be vaccinated but also said that she could not clarify her concerns with J&J.

“There are far too many problems, especially with the FDA and all the warnings that come with it. I would just avoid that completely, ”said Spencer.

Tanya Tatum, who heads the FAMU vaccination center, said fear of possible side effects from J&J had significantly impacted demand for the vaccine. However, the website still has this vaccine in stock as some are still requesting it.

“We do less of Johnson and Johnson than we do Pfizer and Moderna, but we still have people coming and requesting it,” said Tatum.

Side effects are extremely rare, according to Tatum, and the vaccine is still worth the minimal risk as protection from the virus. Out of 21 million doses of J&J administered, about 100 cases of the rare neurological disorder have been reported.

A father on campus, Steven Ware, was shot dead by Johnson and Johnson in April. He said despite concerns and warnings about it, he was still happy with his decision.

“I’m not a needle type,” said Ware. “I think the one-shot got me into it, and here too it was a pretty positive experience for me.”
