TALLAHASSEE, Florida (WTXL) – With new housing now taking less than 90 days, residents of Orange Avenue Apartments are looking forward to the Tallahassee Housing Authority Meet and Lease.
All 200 tenants in the Section 8 condominium were given 90-day notice on July 9. Many we’ve spoken to, like Yolanda Speed, say, “It’s a fight for a lot of people right now.”
To facilitate this fight, the housing authority invites landlords to visit them at the community center of the residential complex.
“You will be able to speak to landlords and property managers in the community who have vacant homes,” said Brenda Williams, executive director of the Tallahassee Housing Authority. “You will be able to see where these units are, how many bedrooms are in each unit, and what kind of amenities can be provided with the unit.”
This is just one of the many ways the Housing Office is trying to help.
“We’re going to provide them with money to pay for any fees associated with transferring utilities and any other type of reasonable financial relocation assistance they may need to move,” Williams says.
Speed says she’s on board with the plan.
“Everyone needs to know where to move if they are moving or if they have help moving. That is a good idea.”
Even if she or others don’t sign a lease this month, Williams says they’ll hold a similar meeting every month until all tenants have moved.
