TAMPA, Florida – The number of new COVID-19 cases in the state of Florida is roughly double what it was the previous week.

There were 45,604 new cases for the week of July 9-15, according to the Florida Department of Health. The percent positivity for new cases – 11.5 percent – climbed to a high not seen in months.

But the more serious indicator of the spread of the coronavirus is also triggering an alarm. Across Florida, about 3,200 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 – a 73 percent increase since June 14 when 1,845 people were hospitalized, according to The Associated Press.

An increase in hospital admissions during the pandemic has shown that actual case numbers are likely to increase in later reports.

There have been 59 deaths related to COVID-19 in the past week.

The recent surge in new COVID-19 cases in Florida is mostly affecting younger people who are less likely to be severely affected, said Dr. Shamarial Roberson, the state’s assistant secretary of health, the AP. However, according to the latest report from the White House COVID-19 team, it is Florida and four other states including Arkansas, Missouri and Nevada that are fueling the country’s latest wave of new infections.

With the rise in COVID-19 cases here in Florida and across the country, where is the Tampa Bay area doing on vaccinations?

According to the latest Florida Department of Health report, here are vaccination rates in Tampa Bay counties:

• Citrus County: 51 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.
• DeSoto Countyto: 46 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.
• Hardee County: 36 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.
• Hernando County: 49 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.
• Highlands county: 52 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.
• Hillsborough County: 54 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.
• Manatee County: 57 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.
• Pasco County: 55 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.
• Pinellas County: 58 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.
• Polk County: 51 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.
• Sarasota County: 68 percent of the population aged 12 and over are vaccinated against COVID-19.

U.S. cases of COVID-19 rose 17,000 nationwide in 14 days for the first time since late fall last week, and a past surge in deaths follows a surge in the disease. Much of the worsening problem is caused by the Delta variant first identified in India, which has since hit the UK and other countries, Murthy said.

While US case numbers and hospital admissions are still well below the levels of the worst pandemic earlier this year, Murthy said the deteriorating situation shows the need to convince more people to get vaccinated.
