Cuban Americans protest in St. Petersburg; Push for US intervention

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (WFLA) – Dozens of demonstrators sang and sang “Libertad de Cuba” along 34th Street North in St. Petersburg at the intersection of 30th Avenue.

Organized the event, Lissette Cepero says that the Cuban people have been waiting for change for decades.

“The military is abusing people on the streets, they are killing people, they are doing everything in their power to show who is in power. Who is in control? ”Cepero believes that given the world is watching events, changes may be underway.

“We want to say stop. Stop doing what it is. The world, the whole world is watching you, ”said Cepero. “Even though you shut down the internet, even though you do all of this, the world has seen what you did and you have to pay for it. “

Cepero only expected about two dozen demonstrators, but as the evening wore on, the number grew to over fifty. Many passers-by did not know about the meeting and stopped to take part.

Jean Lopez, a barber at the Cuban Barber Shop, believes the US government should step in.

Most protesters believe that the US government should take an active role in regime change. Jean Lopez is a hairdresser at the nearby Cuban Barber Shop.

“They need American intervention in Cuba because they kill everyone,” said Lopez. “And the people, the Cuban people have no weapons (rifles) to fight with the army in Cuba.”

Aida Sanchez agrees. “We need help because people are being killed for free. Just to call for a new government to protect the people, ”Sanchez said. “That’s why we’re here. “
