TAMPA, Florida (WFLA) – The number of COVID cases in Florida is increasing, including in the Tampa Bay counties. The state reported 45,603 new cases this week, the highest increase in weeks.
Dr. Vincent Hsu, an epidemiologist and infection prevention chief at AdventHealth, says most of the new cases are of the Delta strain of the virus.
“The good news is that we are not seeing any infections in patients who are fully vaccinated in the hospitals,” said Dr. Hsu. “Anyone who is hospitalized with COVID is not vaccinated.”

Carmello Guercio says he and several other family members recently tested positive for the virus, although most were vaccinated.
“Four of us were vaccinated months ago. We got this false feeling of ‘let’s go party – we’re good’. Well, you know what – we have coronavirus, ”said Guercio.
He says one of his brothers has not been vaccinated and feels more affected by his illness.
“In our opinion, the vaccine works to protect us from being hospitalized, dying, [becoming] terminally ill, ”added Guercio.
Dr. David Dowdy of the Johns Hopkins Hospitals says vaccines are still effective.
“It is important to note that there is no evidence that the current vaccines against the Delta variant are less effective,” said Dr. Dowdy. “Even in places like the US, where the Delta variant has become the dominant strain, vaccines are still working very well.”

He says that people who are not vaccinated will still get seriously ill with the virus.
“Because of this, we have seen the vast majority – over 90% in some places – of serious COVID injuries and deaths in unvaccinated people,” he said.
