Man convicted in federal meth case

Juan Ignacio Hernandez-Pacheco, of Michoacan, Mexico, was sentenced to eight years federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute at least 500 grams of methamphetamine.

He and Israel Bustis-Padilla, also from Michoacan, Mexico, were arrested in August following an investigation by the Gainesville-Hall County’s Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad and the Department of Homeland Security.

Hernandez-Pacheco has reached an agreement based on two packages found during a search, one of which contained 23.3 kilograms of crystal meth and a second package of 7.07 kilograms of liquid meth, according to a verdict filed by defense attorney James Wesley Bryant.

“After the settlement agreement was signed, the government submitted laboratory reports showing that the 23.3 kilograms of suspected crystalline methamphetamine was dimethyl sulfone – what the government calls a cutting agent – and did not contain methamphetamine,” the verdict said.

Since he was only responsible for about 7 kilograms of drugs at the time, Hernandez-Pacheco received a lower sentence.

Bryant said Hernandez-Pacheco has no criminal record. The defense attorney said his client faced challenges early in his life and lived in a one-room home with no running water or electricity.

After his release from prison, Hernandez-Pacheco is transferred to the immigration authorities for deportation from the country.

The Bustis-Padilla case is still open.

Bryant has not returned a request for comment.
