Olympian Ashleigh Johnson's message after USA water polo victory - NBC 6 South Florida

In their quest for a third straight gold medal, the United States water polo team got off to a strong start – beating Japan 25 to 4 – with Ashleigh Johnson, who was born and raised in Miami, playing a key role in landing the win for the team USA with Save to Save.

“I feel good,” said Johnson, the US women’s water polo team goalkeeper is naturally long enough that it’s really nice to just be in the water and play. “

Johnson is in Tokyo and represents not only Team USA, but Miami and black women in the water world.

“I hope all of Miami and everyone of color who can are watching because our team is great,” said Johnson. “Our team has a lot to show and carries the people I represent,” said Johnson.

“I know Miami isn’t really considered a water polo hub and there are a lot of stereotypes about black people,” she said, “so I’m glad we’re breaking those stereotypes and changing the narrative and we’re” bringing water polo to Miami and Water polo in my community. “

The U.S. water polo team waited an extra year to get into the swimming pool and attend the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

With her family and fans unable to attend the Olympics in Japan due to COVID-19 restrictions, Johnson had a greeting for her hometown.

“Hello Miami, hello mom,” said Johnson.

Team USA’s water polo women will take on China in Tokyo on July 26th.
