Southwest Florida artist honors victims of mass shootings

Nancy Kevorkian is a Port Charlotte artist who lowered her flag too often. “We have had too many tragic mass damage incidents,” she said.

Kevorkian was concerned that their actions were becoming less important.

“By lowering the flag, I also began to wonder if we were undermining the importance of lowering the flag,” said Kevorkian.

She began brainstorming a play that would honor those lost in mass shootings. She had a lot of ideas, but ended up on a flag. She made the first from parts of a sweatshirt and shorts.

“A work of art, or in this case a flag, that shows them our respect. Acknowledge them and know that we care and think of them. And then it becomes a work of art. “

Kevorkian digitally sketched their plan. Their first draft was soon discarded. She felt it was not what it originally meant. She kept doing tangible mick-ups until she was happy with the result.

She landed on the perfect design and named it the Recovery Flag. She designed each part as a symbol.

“The background is all black; it represents grief and sorrow. The red stripe essentially represents blood, bloodshed, injury, pain and even suffering, ”she said.

As an artist she does different pieces. She usually goes one-on-one, but she soon started getting requests from others.

“When I first hoisted the flag and recently did so. I’ve had people asking what it was. What the fuck is that. When I started explaining that it was my way of honoring victims, they thought it was a cool idea, ”said Kevorkian.

She said she was not a businesswoman but was exploring ways to sell the flag in hopes of uniting the world.
