Miami Dolphins Camp Countdown: The 5 Best Long Shots to Watch

Miami Dolphins Camp Countdown: The 5 Best Long Shots to Watch

With the Miami Dolphins players reporting to the new Baptist Health Training Complex in Miami Gardens, we’re continuing our training camp preview with a look at the top five long shots.

Our overview is limited to young players or newbies who have not yet established themselves as consistent NFL contributors.

With this in mind, let’s start:

1. DE JONATHAN LEDBETTER

There couldn’t be a better player to put down roots for this summer after what Ledbetter has been through the past two years. Dolphins fans may remember that Ledbetter was the starter in 2019 on opening day after earning the job as a rookie free agent. Ledbetter is a great body on the defensive and he’s been impressive at his rookie training camp. He will need another performance of this kind this summer if he is hoping to earn a place in the squad on an overcrowded defense.

2. C CAMERON TOM

When the Dolphins signed Matt Skura as an unrestricted free agent from Baltimore, it seemed like a given that he would end up being the launch center for 2021. And don’t neglect Tom, who started 11 games for the New Orleans Saints in 2018. Tom came to the Dolphins with a reputation for being a good run blocker.

3. RB JORDAN SCARLETT

The Dolphins’ running back corps is full of young players with limited NFL résumés so there is certainly an opportunity for a newbie to play a role. That goes for Scarlett, who signed the Dolphins to a futures contract at the beginning of the off-season. Scarlett has done little since joining the NFL in 2019, but he’s had a couple of good seasons at the University of Florida. He also looked good in the offseason drills, which were open to the media.

4. DB-TRILL WILLIAMS

Williams was projected as a sixth round election by the good folks at NFL.com ahead of the 2021 draft, but didn’t end up being advertised. The dolphins pounced on him for waivers when the Saints cut him, although it was later reported that they wanted to re-sign him. Williams is a good tall athlete that could be used for safety or as a slot corner.

5. G / T ROBERT JONES

Of the seven players the Dolphins signed as rookie free agents this year, Jones is the best rated NFL contender. Jones received a guaranteed salary of $ 100,000, ten times more than any other free rookie agent on the list. Jones played a real tackle in Middle Tennessee, but he’ll likely be checking out the guard this summer. There is probably still a long way to go for him to reach the 53-man roster, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t stand a chance with a strong performance in training camp.
