The call for freedom in Cuba grows as the demonstrations in Tampa enter their third week

TAMPA, Florida (WFLA) – The cries of support for the Cuban people are getting louder and louder.

Demonstrations continued in Tampa Monday afternoon as thousands of people marched to the Cuban embassy in Washington, DC

Zoila Lahera and several other women planned a protest on Bayshore Boulevard after learning that Cuban Americans were marching in DC

“It is very important that the world comes together to say that this is not enough, that this is not right and cannot happen in our own backyard,” said Lahera. “We don’t stop until the Cubans are free.”

Monday’s march coincides with National Rebellion Day in Cuba, July 26th. In 1953 the Castor group attacked a barracks in Santiago de Cuba, marking the beginning of the Cuban revolutionary movement.

“This is our day to announce that we are taking the day back,” said Lehara.

The march also comes days after the Biden government announced that it would sanction those responsible for the oppression of the Cuban people. President Biden’s plan also includes increasing Internet access on the island.

Lahera says it’s a step in the right direction.

“The start was slower, but they’re listening,” Lahera said.
